  • Concealed carry gets would-be hero killed

I'm honestly shocked this wasn't posted earlier this month...

    LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The couple accused of killing two Las Vegas Metro police officer and a bystander Sunday equated officers and the government with Nazis, according to police.

Police said 31-year-old Jerad Miller and his wife, 22-year-old Amanda Miller, left their apartment about 4:30 a.m. Sunday to begin their rampage.

About seven hours later, according to police, Jerad Miller walked into a CiCi's Pizza near Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, looked around and then walked outside. They said both Jerad and Amanda Miller then walked back into the restaurant, before Jerad Miller walked up behind 31-year-old Officer Igor Soldo and shot him in the head. They said 41-year-old Officer Alyn Beck, who was eating lunch with Soldo reacted.

Police said that Beck was met by gunfire from Jerad Miller and was wounded in the throat. They said both of the Millers then walked up to Beck and fired several rounds into him. They said the pair then covered Beck with a "Don't Tread On Me" flag and tossed a Swastika on his body. They said Jerad Miller then pinned a note on Saldo's body that referenced the "beginning of a revolution."

The Millers then crossed Nellis and walked to a nearby Walmart, according to investigators. They said Jerad Miller walked inside the store, fired a shot and shouted about the beginning of a revolution, telling everyone to get out of the store. They said 31-year-old Joseph Wilcox, of Las Vegas, who was carrying a concealed weapon, was inside the store and saw the commotion. They said Wilcox told his friend he was going to confront the gunman. They said Wilcox confronted Jerad Miller, and Amanda Miller walked up behind Wilcox and shot him in the ribs. Wilcox collapsed and later died.

Regarding the underlined - It's sad to see that the rhetoric of the American right-wing anti-government crowd has now become a violent reality. Sadder still is the fact that this isn't likely to cause any of them to tone it down a little.

Regarding the bolded - Rest in peace to the courageous Mr. Wilcox. He certainly died a hero, but there's absolutely no doubt about it - He'd still be alive today had he done like everybody else that had common sense did and gotten the **** out of the way instead of buying into the conservative notion that armed good guys always stop armed bad guys.

But that's the dream, isn't it? To be able to walk around with a concealed weapon ready to dispense justice to a would-be bad guy at a moments notice and become somewhat of a folk hero for having done so.

Unfortunately, facts have little to no impact on the fantasy.

You're reacting emotionally. I'm not branding all gun owners with that statement - I'm branding all concealed carry advocates with it. That's the fantasy that all of the vocal concealed-carry advocates on the right are harboring. You see it in every debate you have with them on gun control. It's in their rhetoric, FFS.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun."
-Wayne LaPierre, the executive president of the NRA and somebody that you once put on your list of the 10 greatest human beings ever.

That's your crowd's rhetoric, and believing in that rhetoric got this dude killed and left his wife without a husband and his children without a father.

I have no problem with you owning a gun for home protection if that's your thing, though I do think that anybody who wants to own one should be required to go through some sort of recurring licensing program where you're required to demonstrate your understanding of the firearm as well as your comprehension of standard safety techniques.

We do that all the time with cars, FFS. And we require people who operate motor vehicles to renew their licenses every X number of years depending upon what class vehicle you're driving. Nobody screams tyranny over that. But mention it about a gun and suddenly you're a ****ing tyrannical communist intent on stripping away everybody's freedom and wiping your ass with the flag.

We regulate automobiles and alcohol more than we regulate guns. If you can't see the problem with that then you're being willfully ignorant of the data.

Wilcox was not being smart. The difference between someone trained to deal with that situation and a bystander with a gun is gigantic. Fatally so. Police call for backup and do not confront the gunman unless there is no other option. He didn't have a cell phone?

Having a gun makes you brave and sometimes/often stupid.

Edit: deleted post because of lack of tact in wording. I'm just curious op, are you aware of the many instances when concealed carry saved many innocent lives? Why ignore all those, and focus on the 'every once in a while' instance?

Concealed carry permit holder stops shooting rampage in Portland.

The unidentified concealed carry permit holder is not facing charges, and is, of course, being ignored by the national media for being yet another “good guy with a gun” who stopped yet another bad guy with a gun.
