The Americans didnt stop the British from being invaded by the Germans the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy did, although i would admit that the current USS Enterprise could probably take out the entire Royal Navy by itself.

Some elements of the Quaker movement were campaigning both in America and Britain from the 16th century but that doesn't count as actually doing anything about the problem. After all it wasn't until 1776 that the use of slaves was abolished by the Quaker church itself!

Long after Slavery as abolished in the British Empire the United States went to war over the issue! Slavery was a reality in the US until relatively recently hence the civil rights issues that dog them to this day.

The situation is complicated by the messiness of English common law. In theory the buying and selling of people (within England) was outlawed in 1102, though in practice it didn't always work like that. In the 1702 case of Smith vs Brown the judge declared "as soon as a negro (sic) comes to England he is free; one may be a villein in England, but not a slave."
the quakers that wrote the petition weren't even really quakers they were Mennonites from Germany that had recently converted. in Germany at time the only allowed slaves were prisoners and this out side view is what started the idea of universal rights and that all men are created equal. it is this idea that spread through PA until when the quakers were finally separate from england they banned slavery. the petition they wrote was for the English quakers....i wouldn't really expect them to do anything here while they were still part of england.

now im not sure on this part but it seems

"as soon as a negro (sic) comes to England he is free; one may be a villein in England, but not a slave."

this was more so for white people claiming Africans as their slaves with out proof and attempting to claim damages for their property being taken by other people when the african had simply emigrated there and no one owned him.

soon after, holt also said something like trespass quare captivum suum cepit

which i think means that if you can prove hes your slave and you bought him you can bring any claim of trespass against your slave to court.

      thus actually empowering slave owners.

i still say with in the German quakers/Mennonites exposure to slavery up close and personal they were able to see its flaws and bring a new idea of universal equality and that idea of universal equality spread not so rampantly but still spread through the colonies and britan. which in turn put a stop to slavery in britan and eventually america.

        Damn, Sparticus schooling cats.

I think what makes the U.S such a great nation is the mistakes it's made. Because unlike all the countries I have visited, they learn and move forward from their mistakes.

In Latin American there is a culture of corruption that will never go away, where as in the U.S we might have made terrible errors in the past but we have come an incredibly long way in the last 100 years.

From Civil Rights only 40-50 years ago, to now having a black man as President of the U.S.

I love this country very much, don't agree with all of it's policies but as much as I have traveled I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Of course my heart is with Mexico because it's the land from where my ancestors came from and it breaks my heart to see the turmoil it's going through but I also love the U.S and appreciate everything it's given to me.

Switch nationalism with religion, and you may have a point.

Sorry but America has it's race issues. Among other problems.

There are other countries that are better to live in than the UK and US.

I say what the rest of the British are to ashamed to ever admit, The Americans have a system which works, A country where everyone is equal, A land that belongs equally to everyone. We the British have failed. So thats why we get angry when our already severely battered ego gets further deflated.

I as a minority living in the UK wish to convey to the American people our greatest gratitude for upholding the universal priniciples of equal rights, humanity, respect and relgious freedom, The United States truely is a light unto all nations and each and every American should be proud to be a member of a country which judges them not on the colour of thier skin but by the content of thier charachter.

If it wasnt for the US we the British would be licking German Feet and speaking German!

                      ???????????????????

                      And????????????

How about sticking with the topic here. So America has race issues, which country doesn't?

The point of the thread is how great America is and it's the accomplishments that the U.S has made that has made it great.
