The super middleweight division traces its beginning to 1984, when Murray Sutherland defeated Ernie Singletary for the International Boxing Federation version of the title. The World Boxing Association created its version of the super middleweight title when reigning Lineal champion Chong Pal Park defeated Jesus Gallardo in 1987 (Park had been IBF champion before relinquishing the title to fight for the inaugural WBA version). The World Boxing Council crowned its first champion in 1988 when Sugar Ray Leonard defeated Donny Lalonde in a fight that was also for its version of the light heavyweight title.
In other words, no one took the weight class seriously and all the best fighters were at 160 or 175. Hagler was the middleweight champion during the infancy of the divison. For him to move up and win a title and get credit for it, he would have had to fight at light heavyweight, and with his build, that wasn't gonna happen....He is shorter than GGG and he weighed less and turned pro during the same day way in era....I doubt a svelt Hagler was coming in the ring
as a light heavyweight the day of the fight like GGG
Also people wanted Hagler to move up and fight spinks, Qawi and other light heavies during his reign....that's 15 pounds.....people want GGG to move up and in this era its just 8 pounds and he weighs over 168 fight night anyway...2 different scenarios
