  • Comments Thread For: Top Rank Prez Discusses The Situation With Gamboa

Todd duBoef, President of Top Rank, spoke with BoxingScene.com about the escalating situation with former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa. On February 16th, duBoef and Gamboa reached an agreement on the terms for an HBO televised fight on April 14th with Brandon Rios, at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. DuBoef has a paper trail to document Gamboa's satisfaction with the terms, and his willingness to face Rios. Top Rank scheduled a media tour to promote the fight. To their surprise, Gamboa no-showed the entire media tour - including a Monday stop in Gamboa's hometown of Miami, Florida.

Top Rank might have jumped the gun on promoting this fight considering Gamboa never signed on for it.

that's not exactly how it works in every case. mayweather-cotto, for example, did not sign the contracts until a whole after the fight was first announced and hyped up. Certain details of the contract were'nt even finalized when they reached an agreement in prinicple. if you reach an agreement in prinicple to do something, and then don't do it, you could get sued depending on the circumstances.

I understand that, I'm just saying not all blame should be on Gamboa. He's within his rights to not do these things if he hasn't signed on yet. It just doesn't look too good.

Good it happened. Makes you think things once and over again about trusting someone's "words". Believe in things written, not things spoken and floating in the air. Top Rank, another one who turns his back on you!

After Gamboa loses in court big time, loses lots of $ in court fees and damages that he has to pay to TR, and doesn't fight in the ring for a long time... then and only then will he finally realize he should have just taken the fight with Rios.

I see hard times in Gamboa's future boxing career. Sad.

Gamboa fans are trying to damage control this, but there's no avoiding the fact that it's a very poor showing on his part.

Even signing with GB/Floyd after he leaves TR, he will never recoup the amount of money he will lose in the court and the money lost because of his inactivity in the ring because of this.
