Networks either break even or take loses from PPVs. In Pacquiao's case, they most likely just break even. In Mayweather's case Showtime loses money. HBO makes no qualms in saying they don't like PPVs.

No network would make a profit with a guy that asks for a $40 million guarantee like Money Mayweather. Showtime has to support him with strong undercards, and that would cost extra millions. Then the gargantuan amounts of money they have to spend on promotions.

No wonder Showtime is slowing down. Many of their fighters are on a long layoff. The high profile ones now fight once a year. Guerrero, Berto, Matthysse, Khan...
