Movie wise Dean didn't do to much but legacy wise he's undesputable. He's the very definition of a 50s rebel badass! Cultural Icon if anything

Brad Pitt (Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford)
Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Magnolia or Synecdoche, New York, Before the Devil Knows you're Dead is also a great movie)

                Paul Newman (Cool Hand Luke)
                Morgan Freeman (Shawkshank)

                Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan)
Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, LA Confidential, The Usual Suspects - this guy is crazy underrated btw)
                Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate)

                Honorable Mention

                George Clooney
                Gregory Peck
                Robert Deniro
                Al Pacino

nah, an actor is some one who acts, its not gender specific.

eventually the term actrice was created for female actors thus actress is gender specific.

while actor still remains a non gender specific term while it is oftenly thought as gender specific, with the idea of it being opposite to actress.

but i can allways say "did you see that female actor", and it not sound weird, retaining that actor is not gender specific.

                      1. Steve McQueen (Bullitt, my favorite actor)
                      2. Tom Hanks (Cast Away, he talked to a ball most of the movie)
                      3. Gary Cooper (High Noon, President Clinton's favorite movie and influenced President Bush Jr. as well).
                      4. James Stewart (Its a Wonderful Life)
                      5. Paul Newman (The Hustler, as Fast Eddie in 1961 then he replays the role in 1986 in The Color of Money)
                      6. Denzel Washington (Malcolm X)
                      7. Robert De Niro (Raging Bull)
                      8. Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man)
9-10, a toss up between these actors and honorable mentions: Jack Nicholson (The Shining), Kevin Costner (Dances with Wolves), James Earl Jones (Claudine), Ed Norton(American History X), The Magnificant 7, William DaFoe(Platoon), Gene Hackman(The French Connection), George C. Scott(Patton), and Al Pacino(The Godfather)

I didn't put Marlon Brando because I'm unfamiliar with his work other than The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. He was more of a supporting cast in those movies and I agree that Apocalyse Now wasn't his best performance. He came in out of shape trying to play a Colonel, Robert Duvall had a better performance in my view.
