add all the other combat aspects to MMA and boxing is hardly a factor. MMA is not middle ground. wrestling/ground game is much more dominant in MMA. what percentage of fights in MMA end up on the ground at some point? i don't know for sure - but i can tell you that its reasonably high.

regardless, couture is an MMA fighter. he has been training for MMA and been involved in the sport for a very long time now. MMA, wrestling, boxing - these are all different sports. if MMA is middle ground then premier strikers should be able to compete in boxing, and i just don't think that they would cross over well on the world class level.
As someone that's competed in amateur mma i can tell you that boxing is largely the same whether it's with 4oz gloves or 16oz sparring gloves.

The difference isnt in the offense but in the defense. Mechanics are the same but punches are harder to see and go through your guard easier because you dont have as much surface area on your gloves to protect yourself and that is why mma fighters get rocked more easily than boxers. not because mma fighters have glass chins. (even tho there are alot of glass chins in both sports to go around)

Also in most cases you're forced to take a wider more power punching stance than you'd like for balance and defense against takedowns in mma if you prefer to box.

And the reason premiere strikers in mma are not able to transition very well into boxing is the same reason boxers dont transition well to mma but backwards. Just because you're a premiere striker in mma doesnt mean you're actually that good of a striker...it just means they spent more time and emphasis on it and other aspects of their game suffer.

Guys like Cro Cop and Overheem are great stikers compared to other mma fighters but their professional kickboxing records were not all that great compared to fulltime professional kickboxers. Only real premiere striker in the entire sport of mma right now is Cung Le. Undefeated world light heavyweight champion kickboxer in 31 professional fights. And being such a "specialist" if you will he's in the exact same boat as James Toney. His ground game is severely lacking. And yet you're not going to hear anyone complain that the deck was stacked severely against him if he gets taken down and submitted.

Toney = boxer Couture = wrestler. mma= middle ground.

You wouldnt see Toney agreeing to a pure wrestling match with Couture where he wouldnt be allowed to punch at all. Why the hell would you criticize couture for not wanting to step into a boxing ring???

You fools swear like their match this saturday starts with toney on his back already. No...it starts standing and upright in Toneyland where he should be able to dominate Couture if he can keep him at a distance.
Idiot, how many times do I ened to tell you, Wrestling is more useful in a cage than boxing.

Any man can punch, even a child.

Not every man can wrestle, maybe hold but holding doesn;t do ****.

Because if he were to actually win, that would go far in the debate as to who is more skilled: MMA fighters or boxers?

Whether Couture would lose in boxing or not is irrelevant. Why should anyone care? Toney isn't being limited by going into MMA where as Couture would effectively have most of his weapons removed if he fought in boxing.

I have never been taught to box nor wrestle but I could beat a bunch of the wrestlers when I was in high school even with no training. The coaches always wanted me to wrestle but I ran track instead. True, anyone can punch but that does not mean they can win in a fight though......they may suck with aim and be a slow, clumsy puncher who would get schooled by an experienced boxer within 20 seconds.
