  • Berto vs Ortiz is a set up for Errol Spence's next opponent

Berto and Ortiz had their time as titleholders at '47. Ortiz with a bit more dedication couldve been a serious player today. Hard to believe he is still not 30. Berto is at the stage where he can cash out and make decent money against anyone like Thurman, Porter, etc.

Spence will most likely get by Algieri, who is a former titlist and brings a decent name. He doesnt bring power but he brings boxing skills That will show where spence is in his development.

The next step is facing a former titleholder with speed and power. Im picking Berto to beat Ortiz. Ortiz is a front runner and hasnt shown he has the heart to keep going after he gets tagged hard anymore. Berto, although past prime, still fights til its all over.

My guess is by years end, we'lll see spence versus Ortiz or Berto. He'll probably fight a Collazo or Alexander then that will set him up for a title shot.

Kids on the cusp of becoming a serious contender. 147 is so loaded. Idk how the ring has Spence in the top ten and he hasnt beat anyone in the top ten or 15.

I agree with everything you say, however, I don't feel as if Ortiz is a step backwards however, Berto would be IMO. Not because they're a different class of fighter, but because:

...Ortiz always comes with it. Let's his hands go, Berto would shell up and let Spence tee off on him. Doesn't throw as many punches, never did.

Ortiz never showed the heart to go on after getting tagged hard just ask Maidana.

The reason Spence is ranked so high is because of the way he is dispatching of his competition so easily.

Gotta give him credit for his fight with Berto....Ortiz fought like a man possessed in that fight. Wish he had that attitude everytime out

Wouldn't have a big problem with Spence fighting Berto/Ortiz if he gets by Algieri. As long as he doesn't follow it up with another journeyman.

As far as welterweights go....Berto and Algieri are about the same level....Berto at least accomplished becoming a major title holder at the weight and only has 4 losses. One of those he fought through a real shoulder injury(cough cough) and lost to good fighters in the others....Algieri has done nothing at welterweight besides play gatekeeper and has no wins over top ten or fifteen types.
