  • FNR4 Q&A with producer Brian Hayes

Now that we've had some time to look at all of your questions, here are some answers that should help you on your way. Producers Brian Hayes and Mike Mahar are here to dish out some information that you were curious about.

Joe_Jalbert posted: Is there an option for face button controls?

Brian Hayes: No, there is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC.

emeraldgsl posted: What type of customization will be available in the game? You guys make the best Boxing game around, but FNR3 was missing a lot of stuff other EA titles have.

Brian Hayes: The Create Boxer feature includes Photo Gameface functionality, that is a big one. Beyond that, there is a robust selection of authentic boxing apparel and equipment from Everlast, Grant, Lonsdale, Rival, Reebok, Nike, Adidas and Jordan Brand. Most of the apparel and equipment can be customized with a variety of materials and colors. This includes your boxer’s gloves, foul protector, trunks, socks, shoes and robe. Fight Night Round 4 also supports custom music for your Boxer’s ring entrance and has a much wider variety of music genres included also.

tkirch99 posted: What new features are in legacy mode?

Brian Hayes: The original 8 weight divisions. Weight division rankings for the Top 50 boxers. Multiple titles in every weight division. The ability to become a unified champion. Moving up in weight to win or unify more titles. Improved Rival, Rematch and Challenge logic. End of Year Awards. Extensive stat tracking. Six different training games. Scheduling fights on a Calendar. Logic that determines your Boxer’s popularity and Pound-for-Pound ranking.

And all of this is happening in each weight division throughout Legacy Mode. In other words, if you are a Middleweight, the P4P king might still be a featherweight and the Fight of the Year might be at Heavyweight.

eye4ni posted: What do you guys think is the best new feature of legacy mode is?

Brian Hayes: Honestly, there are so many things that we added to Legacy Mode that it is hard to pick just one. My top three would be:
    1. The Legacy Meter: having something to shoot for beyond a title.
    2. Improved Challenge, Rival and Rematch Logic.
    3. Having Divisional Rankings AND Pound-For-Pound Rankings

Mike Mahar: I’d have to go with the Legacy Meter and having to achieve something more than winning a belt. In Fight Night Round 4 as sure as you start your career … your career will come to end. How you meet that end…as a shooting star champ whose career end’s early due to a classic case of too much too soon…or as an old war horse that extends their career against the ravages of Father Time by changing up your style and improving your ring generalship …it’s all is up to you.

What you do in the time you given and how far you stretch your fighter will determine you Legacy Rank in the pantheon of great fighters.

Joe_Jalbert posted: Will there be any DLC made available? if so, will it be out day one or at some time in the future?

Brian Hayes: Yes. Fight Night Round 4 will have a dedicated DLC team in place. Details on when and what are not finalized yet.

GreatOne2009_171294 posted: Will be there be DLC customizations as well as DLC boxers that were not included in the official roster.Thanks.

Brian Hayes: We’ll let you know soon

thegreatone18 posted: I'm actually just curious if you guys have a penalty system in place for online quitters… I'm curious if there is anything in place that will discourage quitting making the online an enjoyable experience and not something that is released with little care to the online community.

Mike Mahar: Yes, there is a penalty system in place for online quitters/cheaters. We achieve this in a similar manner to all EA SPORTS titles by employing a strict set of rules for how an online fight can end. If a fight ends due to dubious circumstances our server logic should catch it and penalize the cheater accordingly, if it was determined cheating took place.

That said, no system is perfect… but we’ll have the ability to augment and update our cheat prevention measures post ship as well as monitor the leaderboards and message boards for complaints and suspect behavior.

We’re not finished once we ship! We’ll be around trying to improve the experience should our online community make us aware of any issues.

McSkylar117 posted: Are Fighters who have fought in multiple weight classes, available at those weights(with appropriate Bodies) for Play Now/Legacy?

Brian Hayes: At this time, there is only one version of each boxer in the game. In Legacy Mode you can move up a weight class and in Fight Now the boxers can compete up to 2 weight divisions apart – so you can still have match-ups between Jones and Tyson or Hagler and Sweet Pea.

bocomania posted: As someone who is just not very good at video games and was turned off because he couldn't even win the title on Easy in FNR2 and FNR3, what does FNR4 bring to the table that will make me want to give the series another try? I know it is a completely different game built from the ground up, but will I even be able to have fun with it after being so frustrated by the previous two games in the series?

Brian Hayes: Well, even when people were getting knocked out while playing the game at E3, they were laughing and cheering. It is a lot of fun and it’s a great-looking game even if you are losing. That being said, Round 4 feels quite different than Round 3, more responsive and, we believe, more accessible. Furthermore, it has four difficulty settings. We hope that you will find one of them enjoyable.

HustlingOnRadio posted: For the boxer's styles did you not only go to the boxer and watch videos but ask the boxers' opponents and ask them for a description of that boxer' styles?

Brian Hayes: Our primary source is video. Whenever we have an opportunity to get first hand input from the boxers we try to make the most of it.

odyus posted: Will you ever consider making a fight night for Microsoft's *Project Natal* in the future, and if you do, will you take it a step further by creating head gear and glove gear that actually gives some kind of physical vibrating feedback to the player letting him/her know he took a hit or landed a hit?? (man one step closer to holograms)

Brian Hayes: Project Natal is a very intriguing piece of hardware and definitely something we will look at in the future. As far as the specific implementation, it is far too soon to say anything.
