  • [HOLY S**T!] 14 Year Old Debates Kevin O'Leary About GMOs (VIDEO)

Anti-GMO activist Rachel Parent got in a spirited debate with Kevin O'Leary on CBC's "The Lang And O'Leary Exchange" Wednesday night.

The Huffington Post Canada | Posted: 08/01/2013 10:51 am EDT

Parent, who scored the debate after a speech she gave critical of O'Leary's comments about GMOs was featured on HuffPost Canada, argued genetically-modified foods should be labelled in Canada and the United States. Europe, Japan, Australia and other nations require GMO labels, but Canada and the U.S. do not.

O'Leary was quick to suggest Parent is essentially operating as a lobbyist for anti-GMO groups and said changes to the DNA of crops will save lives.

I agree with her points on testing and labelling but she's way too radical and unrealistic.

Just put labels on - Ok well that'll be most of the foods.

Just test it better - It's been going for decades.

Then she says she's against all GMO's anyway?

Admire the passion but she's contradicting herself all over the shop.

She might "sound snobbish for a 14 year old", but she's onto something.

According to the Organic Consumers Association, this is a short summary on different regions which have declared to be GE free by banning some or all GE crops from their territory.

Italy: The four regions Tuscany, Molise, Lazio and Marche and
around 25 provinces, cities and communes banned GE crops,
including Rome, Milan, Turin, Brescia and Genoa.

Austria: Bans on three GE maize(corn) (Novartis, Monsanto and AgrEvo), the Federal Institute for Less-Favoured and Mountainous Areas is pressing for GM free legislation and published a study on GE-free
zones, initiatives in the States of Vorarlberg and Salzburg to ban GE
              trials.

France: Ban of PGS and AgrEvo HR rapeseed

Germany: Ban of Novartis Bt maize. The initiative "No GE on
communal land" of BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) launched
activities in several German communities to discuss and vote on the
              GE-free resolutions.

Luxembourg: Ban of Novartis Bt maize.

Portugal: Ban of Novartis Bt maize.

Greece: Ban of AgrEvo HR rapeseed, moratorium of GE crop trials.

UK: The Church of England has refused permission for GE crop trials
on 60,000 hectares of its land, dozens of local authorities supply GE
free school lunches, the House of Commons banned GE foods for its
catering. The vote of the Welsh Assembly to keep Wales GE free was
counteracted by the ministry of Agriculture approving a GE maize variety.
The Island of Jersey banned GE crops.

Switzerland: Although a center of GE science and industry, only two
trials with GE potatoes in 1991/92 have been performed until now.

              Norway:
Banned the import of several GE crops and products which
              contain antibiotic resistance genes.

Australia: The State of Tasmania banned GE rapeseed as weed,
Western Australia has banned commercial GE planting. Australian
States are given the right to declare themselves GE free. Some
communities (e.g. Bondi/Sydney, West Wimmera Shire) declared
              themselves GE free.

              New Zealand:
Some local bodies in Auckland and Wellington have
declared themselves GM free. Trials with GE salmon have been blocked
              by the government.

Thailand: Banned imports of 40 GE crops for commercial planting,
              but not for research purposes.

Philippines: The community of Valencia called for a five-year
moratoria on GE food and GE crop trials and commercialization.
The Philippine president announced a moratorium on GE crop
              research.

              Saudi Arabia:
Banned food that are made from GMOs and declared not
              to import GE wheat.

Egypt: Declared not to import GE wheat.

Algeria: Banned the import, distribution, commercialisation and
utilization of GE plants except for research purposes.

Brazil: Planting GE seeds is prohibited by federal law in Brazil
for the time being, the States of Rio Grande do Sul and Mato Grosso
do Sul have declared their intentions to remain GM-free, 18 States
called upon the Central government to block commercial GE crop

                I disagree.

In Mexico for example, the farmers have been in serious battles with GMO's and Monsanto specifically. The stuff they discovered is absolutely disgusting.

If people want to eat GMO's, then go right ahead, but why are they so opposed to labeling? I can tell you why, because the more information you get, the better educated you will be on how little testing they have actually done and people won't want to eat that crap.

I am willing to bet that in 20,30 years time, we will see studies of how bad these GMO's are for us. How the claim of them helping feed the world is BS as we haven't seen any studies that show they give higher yields.

It's just big corporation finding a way to make even more money on the basic things we need to survive.

This little girl is awesome, and it makes me feel good that this generation is at least QUESTIONING these mother fukers for what they are doing.

You talk of adverse health effects but these have never been proven (yet you moan about the lack of studies showing increased yields, it's a two way street) outside of studies that are scientifically poor , with terrible control size and other flaws. They use shock value pictures like a rat with a few tumours and say that it was caused by GMO's but their experiments are flawed and done by anti-GMO lobbyists or groups and not independent or credible bodies.

Organisations such as the WHO, International Council for Science, U.S National Academies of Science, UN Food and Agricultural have found no problems with GMO's. Perhaps if all the people campaigning so stridently for their prohibition should get some funding for a test from an indpendent body that suits the testing criteria they are after?

I'm glad people question as well but I think this is just another one of those health-scare epidmemics that come and go. I also think it's silly to stop research in such a promising field with the exponential population growth and food shortages worldwide.

Just for reference also, here's a graph of the cancer rates in the US. Surely if GMO's caused cancer and 90% of corn based products contained them there would at least be an increase over the last 10 years if that's how long they've been eating the stuff. Even if there is some adverse health effects (which obviously haven't been proven) it's certainly not the epidemic people are making it out to be if you look at th evidence at hand.
