Jesus, this is a tough one. I really want to break it down to a top 3 by genre, but since that's not the question, I guess I'm going to have to narrow it down to my 3 favorites overall.

Bearing that in mind, I'd probably have to go with the following.

          Elliott Smith : 'Either/Or'

          Katatonia : 'Viva Emptiness'

Nirvana : 'Unplugged In New York'

What's the story (Morning Glory) / Definitely Maybe - Oasis
            OK Computer - Radiohead
            Wave of Mutilation - Pixies
Up The Bracket - The Libertines
Last Of The Steam Powered Trains - The Kinks

            Couldn't keep it too 3.

Most Oasis albums have winners on them but Morning Glory and Definitely Maybe stand out, Don't Believe The Truth is under rated.

im afraid i can't give you a top 3 list bcoz recorded music is overwhelmingly diverse and spread through different genres and sub genres! a discography of a single musician or group of musicians alone i reckon ought to have it's own top 3...

but i understand what you mean mate, so what i would give you are some albums (they are quite good IMO) that could broaden your horizon as you've said so yourself...

                  monk's music by thelonious monk

buenavista social club by buenavista social club

any album (they're all good) by rodrigo y gabriela

niña de fuego by concha buika (you should hear this girl sing my friend..)

                  bullhead by the melvins

                  panopticon by isis

                  epic by faith no more...

That last one is Lateralus by Tool, since you can't really read it.

I don't listen to CDs very often, but if I'm actually listening, there's a 90% chance it's one of these three. All are amazing.
