  • [LMAO!] London 2012: Gold Coast > Rest of Australia

The Gold Coast has lived up to its name, with the city's athletes winning four of Australia's seven gold medals in London.

The performance of Gold Coast athletes has been so dominant that, had the city entered as a country in its own right, it would have beaten the rest of Australia in the medal tally.

The Coast's 44 representatives, either as individuals or part of teams, won four gold, three silver and three bronze in London, an effort that would have placed the city 18th on the medal tally ahead of last night's final events.

That's one place below Jamaica, whose magnificent sprinters led by the incomparable Usain Bolt, won four gold, but above Spain and Brazil, host of the 2016 Games.

Sally Pearson's 100m hurdles victory, fellow Queenslander Anna Meares -- who won cycling gold after beating British arch rival Victoria Pendleton -- and NSW sailor Tom Slingsby snared Australia's only individual gold medals.

The other four were won by teams in sailing, swimming and kayaking, with Gold Coasters prominent in three of those.

Three of the four members of the K4 1000m crew are based on the Coast.

The quartet included Northcliffe's Tate Smith, Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park's Jacob Clear and Illawarra's David Smith, who relocated to the Australian Institute of Sport's Gold Coast canoeing base ahead of the Games.

Former TSS and Bond University student Mathew Belcher won gold in the 470 class sailing with Malcolm Page, who carried the Australian flag in this morning's closing ceremony. The pair entered the Games ranked No.1 in the world and held off Great Britain to snare the gold medal.

Southport swimmer Melanie Schlanger became Australia's first gold medallist at these Games after anchoring the 4x100m freestyle relay to gold on the opening day. Her haul later grew to include two relay silvers.

Teen diver Brittany Broben, the youngest member of the Australian team in London, also returns as one of its heroes after snaring silver in the 10m platform final.

Freestyler Jade Neilsen and breaststroker Brenton Rickard were also involved in medal-winning relays, while Murwillumbah product Jane Moran was a member of the bronze medal-winning water polo team and Matthew Butturini won bronze with hockey's Kookaburras.

errrr, what do you mean from the GC? born there or train there?

    Sally Pearson is from Sydney.

Anna Meares is from central qld... not the GC.

So it seems the GC won no individual gold medals.

You cant claim them as yours if they trained there a week before leaving for the olympics, lmao.

But it is a fact that WA proabably paid for most of the australia's athletes training, so in fact perth holds all the medals because we paid for them :P

Yes, Sally Person is from Sydney originally, but she lives on the Gold Coast and has for many years - therefore making her a Gold Coaster, just like Bernard Tomic.

And nowhere in the article did it say that Anna Mears was from the Gold Coast.
