Amateurs are so watered down, that there are no wars nowadays..l

And curry had a great career,, o'sullivan was a decent pro but limited... Nothing to do with their amateur careers..

But with wars in the pros, it can be limited, especially fighters that start as early as 15, like ones from Mexico.

Of course the amateurs played a role. Punches to the head does you no good.

o'sullivan fought high level amateur international competition from 1980 to 84 as a fairly young guy in the 56 weight catagory when he won the world championship it was an absolute war. People close to him say they noticed a hitch in speech prior to turning pro. He end up with publistic dementia and turned pro under mike trainer and sugar rays guidance and dropped down to 147 . He broke his hand in the simon brown war and took a terrible beating. He dropped out and came back.

Of course, a punch to the head is a punch to the head with or without headgear the damage is the same, most of the damage comes from the rattling of the skull, headgear probably makes it even worse, headgear protects cuts and bruises and temple shots, but it doesn't protect the brain anywhere near as much as people on here think.

I was involved with amateur boxing back when the AAU was the ruling organization. Back then the states did their own thing because the AAU didn't know a damn thing about boxing. So you had all the pro gyms bringing in their kids and they used the pro refs and judges and they ran it like a pro show. Bouts did get rough and they let things get carried away when your considering the fact that some of these kids were very green.
Once the AAU got thrown out the USA/ABF came in and with people like Pat Napp as a National Leader of our boxing team things got safer real fast!
You had to be a member of the USA/ABF with a ryder for the gym and every competitor had their own insurance card. You also had a "bout card" that was kept by an official that recorded the bouts (weight catagory, number of bouts and won/loss) so that the Novice class and Open class were clearly defined.
Things could get a little heated in the Regionals and Nationals or if you were living in some backwards state. Funny for me Mass. & Rhode Island still used the old AAU BS for the longest time. Those old birds were idiots they didn't care for me much! Wonder why?
