  • What did Fernando Vargas do wrong in the Felix Trinidad fight?

From a technical standpoint, what caused Vargas to lose in the fashion that he did?

What went wrong for the then 22-year-old 154 lb champion?

    Post, discuss, and elaborate.

Didn't jab enough and got in to many exchanges. He wanted to prove not all mexicans are ODLH and neglected the jab. Also he should have kept his right hand up at all moments against a guy like Trinidad.

Get hit with loaded wraps and low blows.

Nando moved his head very well. His feet, not so much. And like the other poster alluded to, he didn't keep his right hand up at all times but that could be due to the body shots from Tito. Vargas constantly dropped his right hand when he would throw the left hook. He was prolly trying to protect his body, is my guess..

He fought very well, he just lost to the better fighter. Wasn't as quick, as powerful, as durable nor as experienced. What he did wrong was be born as Fernando Vargas.

at the end of the day tito is just a bad match up for him, its not so much what he did wrong on the night as it was his general flaws as a fighter.

at that point of his career he had been relying on his chin too much, not the kind of guy who got hit with everything but he did get caught with the big shots which are the ones to avoid. he got over aggressive and as a result he got clocked, against tito that resulted with him getting hurt. to which he responded by fighting fire with fire and getting hurt again.

he couldnt outfight tito and didnt have the mental discipline to box smart for 12 rounds. he also lacked the experience to think his way through a crisis like that, he had the heart but that can only get you so far.

what he could have done is jab more and avoid that left hook (like people have mentioned already). but he really did neglect the jab and kept dropping that right hand over and over again. he must have known who he was in the ring with when the fight started so i guess tito hit him so hard he forgot.

Nothing really. **** just got too real and the fight went the way it went. He fought till he had nothing left. I remember hearing papa Trinidad tell Tito before the final started that he was gonna give Vargas a beating in that rd.

                  EZ...2 things

1.He got caught being lazy (should have kept that right hand up at all times like the other posters said)

                  and most importantly

                  2. His mexican pride got in his way....Mexican fighters don't like to take 8 counts on the ground or on a knee....they jump right back up....hurt or not....I truly believe ultimately that helped in his demise...vs Tito tito capotito and ODLH

He faced a hall of famer who was on his prime and had an ATG punching power. No shame on that
