The Summer of 2011 promises to be a fan-favorite season for fight fans. Whether one likes brawling, boxing, or a combination of both, there's something for everyone these coming months.
Here's a look at the best upcoming bouts of the summer:
June 25th
Felix Sturm vs. Matthew Macklin
Unlike many of his recent opponents, Macklin is a real, live threat for WBA middleweight champ, Sturm. The UK's reigning European middleweight champ could very well end Sturm's five year reign.
Devon Alexander vs. Lucas Matthysse
Both are pains in the behind for the rest of the jr. welterweight class— Alexander, because he's a quick, mobile southpaw and Matthysse, because he's a heavy-handed spoiler. Because of that, the loser will be quickly ushered to the back of the line. Alexander and Matthysse, both losers of their last high-profile bouts, need this fight and should be fighting with real urgency.
Fernando Montiel vs. Nehomar Cermeno
Give Montiel credit. Instead of signing an easy fight for his comeback from February's devastating second-round TKO at the hands of Nonito Donaire, Montiel will be taking on solid, two-time world title challenger, Cermeno in a bout that is far from being a sure thing.
Tavoris Cloud vs. Yusaf Mack
The IBF light heavyweight titlist, Cloud, is an aggressive, young fighter and a star-in-the making. Mack has come up short against elite-level opposition, but has relatively heavy hands and is carrying the knowledge that this will likely be his last major bout if he comes up short.
July 2nd
Wladimir Klitschko vs. David Haye
The biggest heavyweight bout since Lewis-Tyson. The animosity and intrigue have turned this heavyweight title unification into the biggest fight of the year and an absolute can't miss for fight fans. Will Haye's speed and athleticism be enough to beat the power and size of Klitschko?
July 9th
Brandon Rios vs. Urbano Antillon
War. There is no other way to describe this upcoming battle. Both fighters are come-forward brawlers and, with Rios' WBA lightweight title on the line, you can count on a bitter battle— Neither fighter knows how to fight any other way.
Kermit Cintron vs. Carlos Molina
Molina is the perpetual overachieving underdog. Cintron is considered the mega-talented underachiever. With this being the first fight in Cintron's deal with Top Rank, he needs this win to stay in the hunt for a Manny Pacquiao fight next year. On the other hand, Molina fights all his fights like there are millions on the line. Any way you cut it, this should be a good one.
Paul Williams vs. Erislandy Lara
Williams is coming off a devastating second round KO against Sergio Martinez, Lara is fresh from an embarrassing draw with Carlos Molina. Both southpaw contenders need a win to stay relevant in the ever-changing, ever-volatile 154 lb. division.
July 15th
Pawel Wolak vs. Delvin Rodriguez
A hidden, under-publicized gem. Wolak only knows forward, Rodriguez is a better-than-publicized fringe contender. Wolak will likely press while Rodriguz will be forced into a fire fight. The end result will be an entertaining battle and a step forward in the jr. middleweight sweepstakes.
July 20th
Danny Green vs. Antonio Tarver
Australia's fan favorite, Green takes on the semi-retired Antonio Tarver in a cruiserweight showcase. While Tarver is well past his prime and fighting a full division above his optimal weight, don't underestimate the native of Orlando, Florida. Sydney, Australia will be jumping and the all-action Green seldom disappoints.
July 23rd
Dereck Chisora vs. Tyson Fury
This battle between, arguably, the UK's two best heavyweight prospect is made better by the fact that both fighters have volatile personalities and a love of hearing their own voice.
Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah
If the focused, prepared Judah comes to this jr. welterweight title unification, things will get very interesting, indeed. Khan could be the most talented fighter in the division, but a 100% geared-up Judah can match him in every category and pull off the win.
August 13th
Joseph Agbeko v. Abner Mares
The finals of Showtime's bantamweight mini-tournament promises to be a true Fight of the Year candidate between two talented, technically sound boxers who like to fight. Both precision boxer-punchers with big money fights on the horizon, expect fireworks.
September 10th
Vitali Klitschko vs. Tomasz Adamek
The elder Klitschko brother defends his WBC heavyweight title against hard-working, tough-as-nails Tomasz Adamek in a bout that is sure to be entertaining for as long as it lasts. Adamek only knows one way to fight, and that's coming forward. Vitali will be 40-years old by the time the fight rolls around and, in the heavyweight division, you just never know when someone has your number. There's one thing for sure, though— Adamek will be trying to go for the kill.
September 17th
Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz
The master technician against the rising young star. Mayweather takes on Ortiz, as the 24-year-old comes off the biggest win of his career— a gutsy twelve round, WBC welterweight title-winning performance against Andre Berto. Will there be any slow-down in the 34-year old controversy magnet, Mayweather? If there is, expect things to get real interesting.
Also in action this summer: Juan Manuel Marquez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Cornelius Bundrage, Humberto Soto, Mike Jones, Marco Huck, Ulises Solis, Michael Katsidis, David Tua, and Jorge Arce
