Sanchez: Here we are in the Golpe A Golpe Ring with Juan Manuel Marquez. We talked a lot about what could happen between Canelo and Floyd Mayweather, but better for Juan Manuel Marquez to physically explain it to us. So Juan: (show) one boxistic quality from Canelo, and one from Mayweather.

JMM: One example, Canelo Alvarez is a fighter who controls you at a distance well, moving his waist, but he also has a very good left hook feint. He’ll throw the jab (throws multiple jabs), and feint with a left hook, then a right hand, and will finish with the (left) uppercut. Or vice versa, he’ll feint the left hook, throw the right uppercut, and repeat the left hook.

Sanchez: Can that land on Mayweather’s slim profile?

JMM: It’s difficult to land on that profile.

    Sanchez: Or maybe downstairs?

JMM: Mayweather also makes it difficult to land downstairs. You have a fighter who turns himself practically to the side. You can try a left to the liver, or a right to the body (throws), but you can’t, because the counter-punches come at you (Sanchez throws right from distance.) The important thing, as you mentioned, is to penetrate the guard of Floyd Mayweather. To come in on the inside (pressures Sanchez against ropes), and throw shots to the head, to the shoulders, to wear him down, to make him lose concentration, and so the judges could see that and give Canelo the rounds.

Sanchez: Feints, left hooks, and right hands from Canelo…feints work well to drop the guard.

JMM: That’s right. Or the uppercut. And to work downstairs to the liver, which will be difficult, but they can feint a left hook to the liver, and come up with a left hook upstairs, right hand, and (left) uppercut all at once.

    Sanchez: Now, Mayweather, Juan.

JMM: Mayweather is a good defensive fighter.

    Sanchez: Perfect.

JMM: He can turn to his side (gets into Philly Shell), and from here you’re not going to land any hooks.

    Sanchez: They slip/roll off.

JMM: They slip off, and then comes the counter-punch, which I think is an important point for Mayweather. The right hand comes out with tremendous velocity, and he’ll finish the combination. Right hand, left uppercut, right hand, left hook. And he’ll start to move and suddenly step back (leans back), and you can’t reach.

Sanchez: For stretches of the fight, it’s one of these (shoots straight right). Then, it’s one of these (throws looping right.)

JMM: Yes, he changes it. Then comes the uppercut. On the inside, he throws very good uppercuts. Canelo Alvarez has to be careful with the uppercuts, has to keep moving side to side at the waist so that he doesn’t give an open target.
