Cotto may have been past his prime, but he was hardly shot. The success of the promotion proved that the fight was hardly meaningless. You make it sound like Hopkins-Jones II, which thankfully hasn't been mentioned yet.
Actually, I was going to mention that, only as an example of a rematch that happened much later that doesn't prove anything, except Hopkins was a little better when both guys were much older, but Jones proved he was better in their younger days. Another much later rematch was Chavez Sr/Frankie Randall 3.
