  • Comments Thread For: Arum Says Network Deals Cause Snags With Golden Boy

On Tuesday afternoon, I caught up with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum inside of the main lobby of the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While Arum was anticipating the grand arrival of his latest signee, former two-time gold medalist Zou Shiming from China, he took a few moments to address the latest developments with another one of his star fighters, Nonito Donaire.

Donaire is presently eyeing an April return to the ring, with reports having either a clash with WBA junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux or a rematch with former titlist Vic Darchinyan on tap.

Tired of hearing Arums bs . The guy is full of ****! So Gb's fighters are tied to one network but they let a future superstar like Adrien Broner box on HBO? Bobs bluff was caught by GB about the 3 mil contract and he knows it. I like Donaire the fighter but he too is another puppet like Pac. Bob has both of them by strings. Bob is acting like GB will cancel the fight on purpose. Why in the heck would they cancel a fight on purpose when they're trying to make money off this fight? They have the best interest of Mares to protect as well. Mares wanted this fight bad n they tried to get it for him. Bob is a scumbag idiot !!!!

No matter how much money is there to be made (Mayweather vs pac), at the end of the day, Bob has his OWN agenda.

If Bob Arum doesn't want a fight, a fight won't be made. Said this for years.

Pac has all the leverage in that situation and calls the shots, while Donaire as a 122 pounder can't afford to harm network relationships. It's different.

Also, Scheafer has agreed with Bob him in the past.

According to the veteran promoter, there are other ancillary issues that have to be dealt with other than the animosity between the two rival companies. “You have to understand; this is not just bombast. There are various elements in doing a co-promotion with them that are irreconcilable. Number one, [Golden Boy has] a different major sponsor for Mares - they have Corona; we have Tecate. They have a different television network in Mexico. They have Televisa; we have TV Azteca.”

If there is one thing Arum and Schaefer do see eye-to-eye on (and yes, they actually agree on something), it’s that there are legitimate issues regarding sponsors and networks. “Bob is right there,” Schaefer conceded, “but that’s why I think when you do a purse bid, then all those issues go away, because, ‘Hey, sorry, we don’t control it,’ and vice-versa. So it is what it is. So Bob can go to his partners and we can go to our partners and everybody is going to have to sharpen their pencils and based on those numbers, we would then participate in such a purse bid. Whoever has more money on the table will obviously be able to pay more for the fight.”
I'm not sure how going to the highest bidder solves the problem though. If they have contracts with different networks and sponsors, it doesn't matter if someone offers more money. The contracts would still be binding.

Not that I don't think Arum is a scumbag in his own right, but I don't think GBP are saints either and clearly they have their own agenda too. People have complained for years about Pacquiao only fighting Top Rank guys. But what has Mayweather fought in the last 5 years? Golden Boy fighters. It makes no difference either way. I think both companies are about making money and both HAVE worked outside their umbrella with Dibella, Shaw, and a host of others. They're only hurting the sport from great fights being made. Inevitably it'll bite them in the ass when they have no other fights to make.
