  • What would happen if the aggressor stopped chasing the lateral mover?

Lets say for instance, in the Lara vs Alvarez fight or in the Garcia vs Peterson, what wouldve happen if Garcia and Alvarez wouldve stopped chasing Peterson and Lara and walked to the center of the ring?

There was a point in the Garcia vs Peterson fight where Garcia stopped and waved peterson over to him but eventually went back to playing cat and mouse. But what wouldve happened if Garcia wouldve just stood there and refused to give chase??

Ive always have been curious about this because I dont think its illegal for a fighter to just walk into the center of the ring as long as he is protecting himself. And there is nothing in the rule book that says one fighter MUST be the aggressor at all times while the other one can move. Any examples of lateral movers being forced to fight in the center of the ring???

i've seen it a couple of times, there was roy jones vs someone and some older fight, where the ref was constantly telling the fighters to work, i've seen a ref at one point call a halt, bring the fighters together and tell them to start fighting

I don't know why, but it's harder than it sounds.

In certain fights, boxer vs boxer, or counter puncher vs counter puncher/boxer, whoever makes the other guy come forward usually wins because their forcing the other guy to do something they aren't used to. Think Mayweather vs Marquez, or Rigondeaux vs Donaire. The guys that had the most dedication and force the other guy to be the aggressor won easily.

The mover would keep circling and pot shotting, only without the discomfort of any pressure to dissuade them. Standing still makes their job easier.

Right...The aggressor NEEDS to be aggressive in his approach(to win points), while the mover/counter-puncher is good enough to sneak in for a pot shot every now and then and score points... I think there's an art in getting the other fighter to fight your fight... and being a good counter-puncher is the highest art in boxing.

They would get pot-shotted. The reason they chase is because the other guy can score from the outside more easily than they can.

Who ever stand still in the middle of the ring, would be vulnerable to being pot shotted all night.

exactly. boxers want to be in the center of the ring with plenty of outs.

True to some extent, but it's worth remembering that you don't have to get on your bicycle to counter-punch. The artistic peak of boxing is countering someone in the pocket, because that is purely about skill level. When the fighter gets on the bike it's as much about athleticism as anything else.

Not every fighter has the natural athleticism needed to fight off the back foot from the outside, just as not every fighter has the chin and power needed to go to war.
