Police have launched a manhunt for a black male in his late teens or early 20s after a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death on a Birmingham bus.
The girl, who has been named by police as Christina Edkins, was stabbed while on a National Express West Midlands bus on the A456 Hagley Road at around 07:40 GMT.
Police said an individual who had been detained had now been was released.
A murder investigation is now underway and the victim's family have been informed.
West Midlands Police said officers were immediately dispatched to the scene following reports of an attack on a passenger but were unable to save the victim.
It is unclear where the girl was sitting when she was attacked on the crowded double-decker bus.
A spokesman for National Express West Midlands told the BBC: "We can confirm that a tragic incident took place on a number 9 service this morning.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the person involved and we will offer all possible support to the police in their investigation into the matter."
West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to an emergency on board a bus in Edgbaston shortly after 7.35am.
A spokesman said: "A senior paramedic officer in a rapid response vehicle, two Basics (British Association for Immediate Care) emergency medics and two ambulance crews attended.
"One person was confirmed dead at the scene."
Detectives began a murder investigation as officers broke the news to the family of victim, who has yet to be formally identified.
Detective Superintendent Richard Baker, of West Midlands Police, said: "As you can appreciate the family are extremely distressed and distraught by the news of today's events.
"In relation to the offender, we are currently actively undergoing a manhunt operation in Birmingham.
"We are utilising every specialist officer, local policing officers and investigators in order to identify, locate and arrest the offender who is currently outstanding."
He said police were investigating the possibility the murder was a random attack, adding: "We're looking at a number of motives at the moment."
The suspect is believed to have worn dark-coloured trousers and a dark-coloured hooded top with a distinctive tiger or leopard motif on the back.
Witnessed said he may have been carrying a small white bag or have had a bandage around his right hand.
The area was cordoned off this morning and and officers remained at the scene on Hagley Road, in Birmingham.
The street, leading out of the city, was closed in the wake of the stabbing and is expected to stay shut for the rest of the day.
Witnesses to the attack were asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
