Actually Golovkin does have a multi fight contract with HBO, same with Kovalev. This is not a pacquiao situation (totally different circumstances).

GGG does have an exclusive contract with HBO, just like Sergio Martinez. Schaefer countered with Showtime knowing damn well HBO wasn't going to let this happen. What do you expect K2 to do? Ask HBO to break the contract so it can bidding war where they will most likely need to spend more money? HBO would never allow that. It's stupid and Schaefer knows this

They could stage the fight outside Continental USA

That literally changes nothing, they don't own his rights to fight in or out of the country they own all television rights in the country. No matter where the fight takes place, it can not be shown on any other television channel other then HBO. That's why his Adama fight was broadcasted in like 300 countries but not the US. Once HBO said they weren't going to broadcast it, no one else had the opportuinty to. HBO is the only channel that can show his fights in the US no matter where the fight takes place.

If GGG has a contract for broadcast on North American soil why would they go to the purse bid? And give all that money to Showtime (which apparently has lost money on TBE)?

Quillin isn't as popular as GGG. Like Miguel Cotto, Golovkin is class A in this fight.
