Legendary light-welterweight slugger Micky Ward has given Amir Khan the ultimate seal of approval, claiming the WBA champion has a ‘lot of heart’.
Ward, known for his ferocious ring battles, is the subject of a new boxing movie that has already picked up Golden Globe honours for its cast, along with being tipped for Oscars later this month.
And with The Fighter hitting UK screens this weekend, the Massachusetts native spoke to Boxing Futures about everything from working with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, to his historic fights with the late Arturo Gatti and being able to hang with current light-welterweights like Amir Khan. Read the full interview here.
Having been thrice involved in the Ring Magazine’s Fight of the Year; a contest dubbed the Fight of the Century; and probably one of the greatest-ever rounds of boxing, Ward is a poster boy for the gutsy boxer and he acknowledged current light-welterweight champ Amir Khan as being of the same ilk.
‘Khan is a great fighter. He’s tall, got a good stature and an even better right hand. He needs to keep his chin down but he’s with the best trainer and if anybody can get him ready for a tough fight, Freddie Roach can.
‘For someone to get knocked out the way he did and comeback to be as good as he is now… credit to him, people don’t usually do that. Everybody’s a good fighter when they’re winning but to be stopped like that and come back, that takes a lot of heart,’ said Ward.
