Bad news for German boxing but excellent for the rest of the world. Less chance to see Geman paper title holders.

It was clear that these news will come some day. ARD paid about 53 million $ for four years. Whooping ampunt of money, but too much. Main problem is that ARD is a public-law broadcasting institution. They get their money of a fee (GEZ) which every household in Germany has to pay. Therefore ARD (other broadcaster ZDF and the radio stations as well) is dedicated to educate and deliver news. There are some board who are controlling the distribution of the money which hinted that no money should be given "to support a sport in which it is the aim to hurt an opponent to make him give up" (roughy translated statement of a few weeks back). [Little notice: some private tv stations in Germany have some policies that they won't show material containing violence at specific times. That made Sat.1 buying the broadcasting rights for Geale vs. Barker but they weren't able to show the fight on TV due to that policy! Only in Germany.....]

The shows are not the best, good fights some time but terrible undercards.
Sauerland has begun to shrink down their rooster, multiple fights are no fighters of the company anymore (Murat, Gerber etc.).
Currently Sauerland is seeking for a new contract with another TV station. Chances are not bad. Mein reason for that is that boxing on ARD had 3-4 million views on a regular basis. The numbers peaked at about 6 million when Abraham entered the Super Six Tournament.

I hope some TV station will continue working with Sauerland. But it won't be the same. Here in Germany ARD is not allowed to show ads after 8 pm. Unlike RTL, where the Klitchkos fight there are no ads between rounds.

            Really informative post; thank you!

After seeing Universum go under after losing their contract, this news of Sauerland losing theirs was very worrisome. German boxing fans are some of the best in the world, I hope German boxing stays strong.
