When you enter a slug fest all technique gets thrown out the window. There's no skillfully avoiding anything, you keep swinging until one of you gets rocked and forced to take a step back.

If a guy knows how to set up chances to counter with the left hook, he's gonna hit you with it. It is a short, hard punch and typically comes from angles, so you don't see it coming. You can keep your hands up, you can cross your feet or do whatever, but you'll get hit. Unless you are thoughtful enough to see the trap he is laying for you and avoid it.
I laugh a bit at guys worrying about a lead left hook because that is reaching and an unnecessary risk. There are so many ways to set up a left hook counter, off any punch an opponent may throw...And it works better with the weight transference on the punch, as opposed to trying to go forward and then turn back with it.
