  • Comments Thread For: Photo: Sergio Martinez Breaks Hand, Likely Out Until 2014

According to promoter Lou DiBella, and adviser Sampson Lewkowicz, WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez went to see a specialist earlier today and it was confirmed that he suffered a broken left hand during Saturday's twelve round decision victory over Martin Murray at Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires, Argentina. DiBella says Martinez broke his hand in the second round, after landing a punch on Murray's elbow. Both the promoter, and his adviser, said the injury "is likely" to keep Martinez on the shelf for the "remainder of the year." Martinez may have also re-injured his right knee; the same knee that required surgery in the aftermath of last September's win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Sergio should take the time to fully heal this time. He doesn't have much left in the tank and these injuries aren't helping.

Martinez should retire. He's made a lot of money, and now he actually has a legacy. I like Martinez, and I know people will disagree with me, but I don't think he has ever been a top P4P fighter. I think he is a good fighter with a ton of heart, who has been able to prevail in many close fights in a row.

Gotta hand it to RJJ Jr for his "Martinez needs to be careful of hitting Murray's elbows during those body punches" comment. Love when he makes a comment and the fighters immediately enact what he was talking about.

Getting old... I can see him staying in Argentina and getting the big money fights now.... unless a bigger one presents itself elsewhere
