Rhaegar Targaryen was the Prince and Heir to the last Targaryen King, Aerys. He "stole" Lyanna Stark, Eddard's sister, Robert's betrothed, and thus started Robert's Rebellion. Game of Thrones takes place 15 years after the war of the usurper.

if you saw every episode then you probably have a clue who the Targaryens were

i'd suggest you try looking some character's guide to help you refresh your memory

i bet you've heard him once or twice but got confused along the way coz of too many characters in the show

the fat guy who was king at the start of the show, beat that guy (rhaegar) to win his throne. that happened 15 years before the events of the book and the show.
