roy jones was 1 of the luckier fighters to come along.he caught hopkins early in his career, hopkins was younger but nowhere near his prime as he got better with age.same thing with james toney.craziest thing about that fight is that they were talking about james moving to heavy during it,saying he could no longer make weight limits.those 2 fights have really carried jones legacy

im not buyin that whole losing muscle argument.its 1 thing if you lose it thru laziness,or poverty, but to do it through proper training an conditioning is not a valid excuse.he clearly beat tarver in the 1st fight, despite what critics said.and he only took the fight cause a fight with holyfield fell thru.he used weight loss as an excuse for looking lackluster against a defensive fighter and to uphold his legacy,he had to take a rematch.they say its the shots you dont see and he got caught with a lucky punch.end of his confidence, end of roy as we knew him

I think he would of beaten any version of Hopkins prime or not, it was Hopkins who stopped a rematch from happening. As for Toney he wanted a rematch at lhw but he never got one, shame really it would of been a good fight.
Completely agree on your weight loss points as well.

He did face real opposition. He beat Bernard hopkins quite early in his career.

NO I do really believe that 20 Ib loss took something out of him. It is a valid reason. People believed that Roy Jones jr. was a superhuman being, but he was just human. Even proper conditioning cannot recover the pre HW athletic ability.

Ive never really bought into the 15+ lbs weight loss excuse, since when does weight loss make a man lose his reflexes, legs and chin? Tarver lost more than him as well 45 lbs and hasnt suffered the same fate.

But, how else could he have lost his physical gifts and athletic ability?

I think theres much more to the story than Jones is telling. His physical decline was way to rapid to be due to weight loss alone.

I believe there is more to it than just weight loss.

It's one thing to have a gut like Tarver at 220lbs, and have to lose fat.

It's another thing to be shredded at a lean 2% body fat 195lbs.. and have to get down to 175.

There is no fat to lose. Water and muscle.

                      Ruiz fight

                      8 months later, tarver fight...
