i work in the aviation field and most jets fly high enough where if it got down to it you would parachute out the old fashioned way.

the main reason you can eject from fighter jets is because they can blow the cockpit because they have shape charges set all around the frame of the glass.

in a jet if you placed the shape charges across the entire top of the plane and made it to where they could blow the top....well it might weaken the entire frame of the plane

but there is a VERY cool Single-Engine piston plane that has a parachute in the tail so if you lose power it will land you safely

its called a Cirrus SR22 and uses a BRS system which other planes are starting to use

That's awesome, and kind of what I was trying to get at... Nice thanks..

And LOL at all the responses... Dicks.

          That parachute looks massive.

Since most of us aren't stylin enough to be flying in small jets, I think it would be very difficult to find an alternative in commercial airliners.

I think the issue is, how the hell do you control that thing?

If you are near water, it's not like you can steer it to get out of danger.

Seems like you just land where you land.

          Although it's better than crashing.

its probably a little bigger than a normal parachute.

            sr-22's are pretty tiny

            like most single engines.

The jet would be moving too fast, surely
The force from opening the parachutes would probably tear it in half
Plus the outer panels on planes are hugely important, so I guess removing ones from the top would cause huge increases in stress on certain parts
But its more than likely been discussed and designed in the past.

                      That is ****ing nuts man.

My cousin is a major airline pilot and told me some air space above certain airports some jets are closer to each other than you would ever think.

                      Not in the us thankfully....
