Centro de Cancun, Cancun, Mexico - James Kirkland (30-1, 27KOs) stopped Alfredo Angulo (20-2, 17KOs) in the sixth round of a war. The fight was a WBC junior middleweight eliminator for a mandatory shot at the champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. In a sure fire round of the year, Kirkland was knocked down hard by a big right hand in the first thirty seconds of the first, and survived a wild swinging Angulo for nearly two minutes. Once Angulo punched himself out, Kirkland started battering Angulo, knocked him down, and nearly finished him off by the end of the first bell. After several more rounds of warfare, the referee jumped in as Kirkland punished Angulo against the ropes in the sixth.
