The guard in Sambo is weaker than the guard in jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu is clearly the best grappling system, Werdum proved it. The only reason why it works with Fedor is that Fedor is an amazing athlete. Arlovski who was a world champ or silver medalist never had any ground game, same thing for Herring who has a sambo background too. Aleks's ground game is **** too.

Sambo is far more complete and fighters do get caught out. Sometimes the better fighter gets KO by someone unexpected or subbed quickly by someone unexpected. Also Fedor could have gotten out of that situation as per the Gracie's breakdown of the fight, Fedor made the mistake and Werdum too advantage of it.

sambo has the same lineage as brazilian jiu-jitsu.

bought are based on judo. judo/bjj/sambo are very similar except sambo has some wrestling mixed in and doesn't emphasize the guard as much as bjj.

the difference is in the training.

bjj guys train more on their back. sambo uses its superior wrestling to stay on top.

He mentioned this in an interview many years ago, it isn't breaking news. His style is Combat Sambo + Judo, which is a sound enough grappling base for anyone. Combat Sambo is a complete fighting system which he combines with the standing throws and trips from his judo background. As was mentioned, this basically gives him the same lineage as BJJ developed out of.

it doesnt really matter what system is better. It's mma! its your job as a mma fighter to know all styles! If you focus to much on grappling or BJJ or boxing your going to be one dimensional!

This is why i think sambo is better overall because it was designed from the beginning to take the best aspects of different forms, it IS MMA.

Fedor got caught out with the triangle, this technique isnt unknown in Sambo.

Fedor's left arm was not controlled for long the first time Verdum caught it.

Fedor basically left that arm in the same position while pounding and it got trapped a second time, Verdum locked it, and the rest is history.

I don't think he'll make that mistake again.

When you look at it, 90% of grappling whether is be Judo, BJJ, Sambo, or Submission Wrestling is all the same. The difference comes with some minor detail, a few techniques, and the biggest one, EMPHASIS!

In Judo you learn the same armbar you learn in BJJ, the difference is that BJJ spends 90% of the time there where's Judo is more of a 70/30 split with Throws and Submissions.

Can't really say what's superior to what...in MMA, anything can happen so you can't say BJJ > Judo or Sambo > BJJ because there's just no way to prove it(Sambo guys have beaten BJJ guys, BJJ guys have beat Judoka, Judoka have beat SAmbo guys, etc.)

I guess depending on the rules it can be said...

Sambo rules = Sambo > all
Judo rules= Judo > all
BJJ/Submission Wrestling rules = BJJ/Submission Wrestling > all

Streetfight = who knows, one punch ends a fight, 5 guys beating on you makes grappling essentially useless, 1 judo throw will **** you up, an armbar will stop a person, weapons change the game, there's too many variables.

But Fedor comes from a strong Judo and Sambo background, which makes it fine for him. He has amazing throws, his technique is top notch, he's got a very good solid submission defense game, and he is damn slick and quick when it comes to slapping on a sub.
