Too much hype not needed to sell a fight - Pacquiao

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 11/26/2009 11:22 PM

MANILA -- Seven-time world champ Manny Pacquiao said the record pay-per-view buys of his “Firepower” match with Miguel Cotto has proven there’s no need for “trash talk” to sell a fight.

The “Firepower” match has recorded 1.25 million pay-per-view buys, higher than the 1.05 million buys generated by Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s comeback fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.

“Pinatunayan natin na mas popular at mas sinubaybayan ang aming laban ni Cotto kahit na wala sa aming dalawa ang naging mayabang o nag-ingay upang maibenta lang namin ang show,” said Pacquiao in his column “Kumbinasyon”.

The Filipino boxer is apparently alluding to certain apparent publicity stunts involving boxing, including the steroid claims made by Mayweather’s father Floyd Mayweather Sr.

Mayweather Sr. made doping claims against Pacquiao, who has become Floyd Jr.’s closest rival after the Filipino’s spectacular win over Cotto.

"I know Floyd is the best," Mayweather Sr. said in SI.com. "But when [your opponent] uses something illegal, even the best can get hurt."

Pacquiao, however, has consistently passed drug tests conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The Filipino boxer also praised Cotto for bringing out his best and helping improve boxing's stature as a sport.

“I salute Mr. Cotto for making our fight one of the best fights of the year, if not the best,” he noted.

Pacquiao among ‘Athlete of the Year’ nominees

The US Sports Academy (USSA) has included Pacquiao in the list of nominees for the 2009 Male Athlete of the Year award.

According to PhilBoxing.com, Pacquiao is included among the 12 male candidates for the top honor. The winner will be determined via online balloting.

The report said the “The Athlete of the Year ballot is the culmination of the Academy’s yearlong Athlete of the Month program, which recognizes the accomplishments of men and women in sports around the globe.”

Also included in the list are: Craig Alexander, triathlon, Australia; Usain Bolt, track and field, Jamaica; Drew Brees, football, United States; Kobe Bryant, basketball, United States; Angel Cabrera, golf, Argentina; Roger Federer, tennis, Switzerland; Santonio Holmes, football, United States; LeBron James, basketball, United States; Jimmie Johnson, auto racing, United States; Albert Pujols, baseball, Dominican Republic; and Tiger Woods, golf, United States.

Those nominated for the 2009 Female Athlete of the Year are: Yelena Isinbaeva, track and field, Russia; Carmelita Jeter, track and field, United States; Courtney Kupets, gymnastics, United States; Linet Masai, track and field, Kenya; Lorena Ochoa, golf, Mexico; Courtney Paris, basketball, United States; Sanya Richards, track and field, United States; Jiyai Shin, golf, South Korea; Diana Taurasi, basketball, United States; Lindsey Vonn, skiing, United States; Chrissie Wellington, triathlon, United Kingdom; and Serena Williams, tennis, United States.

Votes can be submitted on the USSA’s website. The athlete with the most votes regardless of gender will be the Overall Athlete of the Year.

Balloting will start on December 1 and will remain open until December 24.

Last year’s winners were 2008 Olympic stars Michael Phelps and Nastia Liukin.
