Yeah, the military will contact you trying to get you to sign up. A draft is the only reason for the number I think.
The Selective Service System is a means by which the United States maintains information on those potentially subject to military conscription. All males between the ages of 18 to 25 are required by law to register within 60 days of their 18th birthday[2]. As of the end of 2008, the names and addresses of over 14 million men are on file.[1][3] Registration for Selective Service is also required for various federal programs and benefits, including student loans, job training, federal employment, and naturalization.[4] The Selective Service System provides the names of all registrants to JAMRS for inclusion in the JAMRS Consolidated Recruitment Database.
