I don't support socialism. Just to let you know socialism is defined as:

The state or the people own the means of production and redistribute the proceeds according to the needs of the populace.

Government assisted tuition, government run healthcare and social security safety nets are not socialism.

you like to use the word FREE but really, is your system actually free? do you really have the choice in your hands? the choice is in how much money you've got. if you can't pay for your cancer treatments, well, the choice has been made for you. if you can't pay for your education well, the choice has once again been made for you. here, we have actual freedom. where having an education and being treated for any health issue is completely up to you.

Everyone in Canada lives in a hut with their heads up their arses. Haven't you ever seen Strange Brew?

In any case while the level of healthcare in Canada may have upper limits that fall short of that available to the moneyed in the US nobody goes bankrupt because of the cost of treatment. Nobody has to wait for their symptoms to get so bad that they have to visit the emergency room for an ailment that could be treated more quickly and less expensively in a doctor's surgery.

One thing that is missing from Canadian healthcare is the option to upgrade. It's not illegal to have private healthcare but it is illegal to provide insurance plans for it. This essentially means that the middle classes are denied access to shorter wait times etc as well as the poor. Canadians are afraid of getting "like the States" but they would actually be getting more like Denmark or the UK.

What you have to bear in mind is that the tax burden in the UK and Canada is the same as in the US, but you actually get something back for your money.

Its true that collectively a higher percentage of our taxes go towards subsidising health care, which by definition means that for us to move towards a cheaper health care system, we would have to move towards a less effective health care system.

Our healthcare costs nearly double what yours does, and it is not because it is ridiculously over priced, it is because it is higher quality healthcare with less waiting times, more access to specialists and elective treatments, and more options as to choice of doctors.

I also believe that part of the reason that the Canadian health care system does work for Canada is because when it does fail, you have the option to travel south to utilise our system, even though it usually costs you a boat load.

I like the American system. It works for me. My insurance is great. It covers everything from massages to dental work.

Also, I believe the stories of our healthcare system bankrupting people are blown way out of proportion. I do not know a single person that has fallen victim to the health care system.

Most of the people that it does happen too are victims of misinformation. They are the people that were convinced by insurance salesmen that for $25 a month they were going to get super deluxe premium coverage, then they are surprised that it isn't actually super deluxe premium coverage.

They are the victims of fraud and naivety.
