Taylor already training for Lacy, "no tuneup needed"

Taylor vs. Lacy in works for October

By Chris Givens, Arkansas ******** Gazette

LITTLE ROCK — Jermain Taylor and Jeff Lacy knew this day would come. They just probably didn’t think it would come at a time when each fighter needed a quality victory so badly.

Lou DiBella, Taylor’s promoter, confirmed that he has offered a fight to Golden Boy, Lacy’s promoter, for this October.

Lacy and Golden Boy have yet to officially accept the offer, and there’s still the matter of selling the fight to HBO, but Taylor and Lacy, former Olympic teammates and roommates, both said they want the fight.

“Me and Jeff Lacy, we’ve talked about it,” Taylor said. “He’s all for it, I’m all for it, let’s go make a good fight. And it will be a good fight. He’s really strong. There’s no underestimating Jeff. He comes to fight every time. I’m all for this fight, done deal.”

The local edition of the article contains some material at the end that was edited from the story at the link pasted above. Here's the end of the printed story:

One big name that was discussed as a possible Taylor opponent - Felix Trinidad - is no longer an option, DiBella said. DiBella said if Lacy falls through, other possible opponents are Ricardo Mayorga or Carl Froch.

Regardless of the opponent, Taylor will fight in October, all parties said.

If Taylor’s opponent is Lacy, there might be an old score to settle.

The two fighters often sparred with each other in Olympic training camp, and there seems to be some disagreement as to who got the better of the sessions.

Lacy was in attendance at the Taylor-Winky Wright fight in 2005, and said unequivocally that he got the better of Taylor.

Taylor laughed when told of that conversation.

“Oh man, please,” Taylor said. “I got Jeff bad in those sparring matches. I got his butt. He knows it. I know it.”

I would like to see Taylor-Mayorga but at 160 not at 168. I don't think Mayorga's that competitive at 168 but makes for an "interesting safe" Taylor aopponent.

I've seen Froch 2 or 3 times and haven't thought much of him...

I think Taylor got some much needed rest, hopefully got his mind back in the right place, and it sounds like he is ready to get back to work. How else do you explain getting back into the gym in June for a fight that hasn't even been made yet, 4-5 months down the road? He may have famously said "I don't really like boxing (as a sport)", but he definitely likes to box.

I have no doubt who got the better of those sparring matches; Lacy may have stung Taylor a few times with his size and power, but I'm sure Taylor picked him apart technically. The only way Lacy can win this fight is by lucky KO. Taylor wins a wide decision.

Taylor gets no tune-up for Lacy?? WTF???

Lacy IS a tune-up before Taylor gets Kessler (or Froch).

Just got off the phone with Taylor's trainer Ozell Nelson. He says, "He just comes in and hits the bag. We're not training for no fights right now."
