"Human beings are like a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many different languages. The child knows someone must have written those books . It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see a universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws, but only dimly understand these laws."

Do you really think if a nuclear weapon(there are more and more being created as time passes) fell into the hands of the wrong person or people that they would even hesitate to use it? America used it. If Japan had the technology, they would have retaliated and our world as we know it would already be over. History ALWAYS repeats itself yet nobody seems to see it coming There's a line between imagination and reality. The reality is we will destroy ourselves if left alone. It's what we have always done and always will do. Last edited by Strictly_UG; 02-13-2013 at 10:04 AM.. |

"I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with fates and actions of human beings" -- Albert Einstein Re Baruch Spinoza "Spinoza denies the immortality of the soul; strongly rejects the notion of a providential God—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; and claims that the Law was neither literally given by God nor any longer binding on Jews" So if Einstein believed in a god it most certainly wasn't yours. |

Are you suggesting religion could preserve our humanity?
I see it as just another reason to fight over something. Once we learn to accept everyone for who they are, then we'll get somewhere. The terrorists in the middle East do not fight for Apple or Microsoft, they fight for Allah. As religion becomes less and less prevalent, we advance as a species. Just look at all the wars in our histories, the burning of witches and other various acts in the name of religion. We are a destructive species and conflict will always be in our society, it's in our nature. Humans were not meant to be ruled, no animal is. But we are so much more aware of our fate than other animals and so fearful that we really want to believe death is not the end. We don't like the idea that we are governed by genes and our existence is to only carry on those genes. Also, to that guy quoting Einstein - define what God is. To me, a God could be a computer system that created the universe, it could be a black hole were our universe resides at the bottom of it. It could be anything that created our universe, this does not relate to religion though. God is the answer to the question of who/what created the universe, religion tries to personify this being/entity/object whilst adding in opinions of it's author. |

Religion in one form or another will always exist.
It might be a case that some groups wont want to be labelled a religion, yet other groups will. Look at Scientology and Satanism. Both call themselves religions yet everyone else calls them cults. Then Intelligent Design is religion based, yet they would rather be seen as mere science. Then there was an Atheist church gathering recently in England. It was more a social group where different speakers talked about science and philosophy (and stand up comedy), and they are careful for the main organiser not to become a figurehead that could be seen as a leader and therefore form a cult or religion. Seems religion and ritual are hard to avoid. |
