Explain the double standards against Floyd and Margarito. But not Roy Jones ?

A couple of things I wanna point out.

1- People keep saying how Floyd avoided so many fights in 2007 and 2008. Paul Williams, Cotto, Magarito and later on Pacquiao etc.. They were all highly ranked and around his weight. He didn't fight them.

Well, Roy Jones Jr during his MW-SMW-LHW Run had
Michael Nunn
Nigel Benn
Chris Eubank
Julian Jackson
Dariuz M
Gerald Mccellan

and he didn't fight them either. Now could Roy have beaten them all 'h2h'.. everyone thinks so. Well Floyd 'h2h' could also beat Margarito, Williams, Pacquaio and 2007-2008 Cotto... The fact of the matter is.. Floyd actually fought more of his competition than Roy.

Both are ATG'S. No debate should be had from that. But let's call a spade a spade.

Nobody give Margarito credit for beating Martinez, because Martinez was a third year green fighter.. Hopkins was a third year green fighter when Roy beat him as well.
Yet Hopkins win is always talked about.


The Bernard Hopkins that fought Roy was inferior in every way to the Hopkins that emerged later. The defensive mastery, the unique traps, the combinations, and his ability to turn your biggest assets against you all came later on during Hopkin's career. Against Roy, all he had was youth and his reflexes. Roy Jones Jr meanwhile, mostly depend on his reflexes and pure speed to win fights even DURING his prime. Yes Roy was a great trap setter as well, but his MO was the reflexes,speed and sheer athleticism.
Bernard's MO was his defense, and his mastery of the game. All of which only came through experience..


Bernard was not quite as inexperienced as Martinez was at the time he fought Roy, but he sure as hell wasn't far off it.

He didn't stick around long at middleweight to say he inexcusably ducked anyone. He wasn't at 168 long either, but while there he dominated Toney, which was good enough to excuse the names he didn't fight. He pretty much fought everyone at light heavyweight, where he spent the majority of his "p4p best" years.

The reason Jones deserves a lot of credit for Hopkins is that it was the first title fight for both guys. Jones may not have been as green as Hopkins, but he was close enough that both guys were basically at the same point of their careers. Considering Hopkins didn't clearly lose a fight until this year after that, it's a very good win.

Roy's career has many what-ifs at 160 and 168, but what he did do is plenty impressive.

Eubank and Benn would of both stopped Roy Jones easily that's why he ducked them like a typical American *****

Thank you for your view point. I always wondered about that, because at times it seem like Floyd got a bit harsh viewings when others seem to have done the same.

The main difference between the two is that Roy has wins over Hopkins and Toney, two of the greatest fighters of his era, and he also has the move up to heavyweight to win a title followed by the move back down to light heavyweight to win back a title. Those accomplishments trump anything Mayweather ever did, and prove Roy's greatness in a way Mayweather doesn't seem to care to prove.

The difference was even though Hopkins went to jail, he still had an amateur career before, and boxed in prison, Jones turned pro the year before Bernard. Martinez started boxing at 22 and had next to no amateur career... But for the most part I agree with you about Floyd and Roy.

Although I would have loved to seen them fight, I have no doubt Jones would have beaten both of them! Jones wasn't stopped by Toney, who was a level above Eubank and Benn and hit harder than Eubank and nearly as hard as Benn, so why do you think they would have stopped Jones?

floyd has never beaten anybody as good or remotely close to a james toney or bernard hopkins.

just look at floyd top 3 top 5 wins and compare that to other ATGs.

for all the flak pac got for not fighting slick fighters, floyd himself has never fought a slick fighter.

flloyd has yet to face a legit bona fide prime hall of famer in his entire career.

add that to floyd's utterly repugnant behavior towards current boxers, past boxers, security guards, women, people who interview him, fans, its easy to see why floyd got more hate than roy.

plus blogs, internet message boards, and social media wasnt what it is now when roy was cherry picking.

i always saw roy jones as a super middleweight, who campaigned in the lightheavyweight division...he was just visibly smaller than the natural lightheavys, and i gave him credit for using his talent in his wins against montell griffin, virgil hill, eric harding, antonio tarver, and minor credit against julio gonzalez...all of those guys could have walked roy down sizewise....going from 154 to win a heavyweight title against any heavyweight, you gotta definitely recognize that he used his talent to accomplish that...

floyd mayweather jr., has the talent to surpass roy imo...
