IMO the bombs were dropped for 2 reasons.
Avoid the nightmare of invading Japan and the US casulties. Send a message to Stalin to not have ideas of taking Western Europe when the Germans were finished. I am pretty sure that The Russians would have pushed through the British and US troops and taken Western Europe if it were not for the threat of nuklear attack. |

Many historians disagree. The schock of the atomic bomb was huge and the consequences must have been hard to fathom. Furthermore the jap decisionmaking had to go through the emperor and since we are dealing with a people wanting to die kamikaze style rather than surrendering, it is in my view understandable that a capitulation without a fight, is a difficult decision to make.
