TUNNEY! He got a large dose of possible reality from Greb fairly early on. Then got his act together and learned the harsh realities of '20s boxing success, like paying boxing scribes off for advancement.

p.s. He could have mowed those early '30s heavyweight bozos down.

Saman Sorjaturong got starched in 2 rounds by Ricardo Lopez and went on to beat Humberto Gonzalez and make 10 title defences afterwards. Also, Diego Corrales had 3 great victories in a row following his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. I'm not sure how applicable this example is because he had already had a good career by then, but those were his best wins and for them to have come after such a devastating loss is impressive.

Eusebio Pedroza (KOd by Alfonso Zamora).

Kostya Tszyu (KOd by Vince Phillips, who himself had a very good run after being whacked by Ike Quartey).

Julian Jackson (KOd by Mike McCallum)

Ali being out foxed and boxed by Smokin' Joe Frazier!!! Not only got whipped but got dropped and was hurt too!! Ali went to Frazier way to soon after his exile, he needed more than Quarry to get ready for Joe. Frazier was at his best that night and he knew Ali was not ready to deal! That night you saw the real "Smokin Joe"!!! Ray.

That was not a devastating defeat for Ali. He gave Joe a great fight in the biggest sporting event of all time. Ali believed he won....so it didn't seem like much of a confidence killer.

Ali fought Bonavena after Quarry too.

I think that Ali's team, not to mention Ali himself felt that he was ready for Frazier based on the fact that he had dealt with two former Frazier victims in more dominant fashion than Joe.

But you are right, he wasn't quite ready for Frazier. Another year of fighting Ellis's, Fosters and Quarry's would have helped him alot.
