the pacquiao fight would be bigger for his legacy. mayweather could go to 160 and fight anyone with a title and when we look back on it years down the road he probably won't be criticized too much for not fighting martinez. but he'll still get credit for being a however many divisions/titles champion.

if martinez doesn't beat mayweather/pacquiao or move up and beat some of the top guys at 168 he'll just be remembered as a guy who had some decent wins against pavlik and williams.

if mayweather moved up and beat martinez he'd get some serious credit from the hardcore fans RIGHT NOW. but i'm looking at this in more of a long-term light. you know 20 years down the road when theres probably even more ridiculous ABC titles and fake/paper champs and martinez was just some guy who was "a decent titlist", people will be saying he ducked pacquiao.

You won't see a change in odds until money starts coming in and who's going to bet on a fight that hasn't even been signed?

It's like this Martinez at any 154/160 does more for Floyd's legacy. Because he is frankly better than any fighter Floyd has ever faced in his entire career at the time Floyd fought them. I don't think that one can even debate that.

Meanwhile it should be obvious by now that Floyd & Pacman are not the same class of fighter. Floyd can adapt & change style/gears whatever as needed in a fight. Pacman fights only one way. Move & the fight is winnable.

I know that many feel Floyd beats Martinez. I wonder what is fans are gonna say when Floyd blatantly avoids him. I beat they're gonna pull a page right put of the Pacman fan handbook & say that weight doesn't matter, he would have beat him anyway, so there's no need.

Winning a title in your 6th weight class/3rd Ring title with your 1 Lineal title[Total of 4] in a 50-50 fight>Winning the WW championship again.

Luckily, we might get Mayweather-Martinez, because the Pac fight is just not happening while Pacquiao is with Bob Arum.

I thought legacy-enhancing starts with furthering your accomplishments? How does winning a title in your 6th weight class and adding a new Ring title to your resume is not greater than winning some big money prize fight against a guy who might not even make it through Timothy Bradley and got a gift against Marquez?

The stats will still be there to be seen after 20 years. You have to realize that Martinez is not just another title holder. He is on a great run of victories at 160 Pounds. Since losing to Williams in a very close fight he has won all of his fights convincingly. Mayweather going up to 160 Pounds and defeating Martinez will be a better finishing touch to his legacy than fighting Pacquiao at this particular time.

So are you guys saying that the odds maker are going to drop the odds to 1/1 once it's signed? The day of of the fight Ortiz was a 4/1 underdog, Cotto right now is a 5/1, which will probably come down to 3/1 on fight night, are you saying that the Pac's odds are gonna go up?

"Legacy" has to be clearly defined.

If you mean paper legacy, in a boxrec/stat-junkie sense, then no question
that Sergio potentially yields a higher return on investment.

If you mean popular legacy, the same venue in which fights like Ali-Frazier3,
Hagler-Hearns, Tyson-Holyfield1 and the like, continue to resonate in the
consciousness of the public (many of whom who hadn't even been born when
those fights took place), well then of course, it's potentially Pacquiao.

amongst hardcore fans it's martinez at this moment in time, but amongst the general public, the pacquiao fight would do more for his legacy, imo.
