The major issue is that no matter how bananas somebody's crackpot theories are the other conspiretards won't criticize it. There is a bizarre solidarity that even when someone is making your fringe group look even more ridiculous, you're not allowed to call bullshit.

You find that in alternative medicine practitioners. They'll stand up and applaud Matthias Rath, a man whose stance on AIDS and HIV drugs may have cost hundreds of thousands of South Africans their lives as he lines his pockets with vitamin sales. They'll cheer on Andrew Wakefield who subjected children to invasive and unnecessary medical procedures while conducting research he was paid to do by lawyers attempting to sue vaccine manufacturers.

You don't find that in mainstream science. If someone comes out with something that is obvious bollocks then the scientific community challenges it. But in the realm of pseudoscience any dissent is seen as harmful to the cause. This indicates to me at least that truth seeking is not a goal of conspiretards. Instead they have a product to sell, an idea, and they consider the support of myriad ideas, no matter how ridiculous, to be a strength rather than a weakness.
