Russia "We ready to help Iran build Nuclear Plants"
Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko says Russia will continue its nuclear cooperation with the Iranian government and is ready to assist Tehran in the construction of other nuclear power plants, Press TV reports.
Speaking at a press conference with Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Chief Fereydoun Abbasi in the southern Iranian port city of Bushehr on Monday, Shmatko said Russia is willing to cooperate with Iran in the nuclear energy sector in the future.
He stated that Russia has considerable experience in the construction of nuclear power plants, and the deliberation process for a new nuclear plant in Iran will be underway once Bushehr nuclear power plant reaches its full capacity.
Shmatko also said that the Bushehr power plant would become fully operational according to the set timetable, and maximum security measures have been taken into consideration at all stages.
He stressed that Russia, given its contractual obligations, would give a one-year warranty for Bushehr, meaning that any piece of equipment that needs replacement would be replaced for free.
The Russian energy minister, meanwhile, expressed his country's interest in further cooperating with Iran in the field of energy, particularly the development of the Azar oilfield in the Caspian Sea.
Abbasi, for his part, underlined that the generation of 20,000 megawatts of nuclear electricity is of paramount importance to Iran.
“We need to rely on our domestic expertise and cooperation with other nations to be able to launch other nuclear power plants in the future. The good experience we (Iran) had with the Russians in recent years encourages us to consider future cooperation with them,” he said.
Abbasi added that Iran and Russia currently enjoy a good level of cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.
“The completion of Bushehr plant by Iranian and Russian experts paves the ground for future nuclear cooperation,” the IAEO chief noted.
Abbasi also described the know-how to utilize peaceful nuclear energy as the driving force to acquire other cutting edge technologies. “Iran has made remarkable scientific progress over the past 15 years as it has strived to access civilian nuclear energy,” he said.
The IAEO chief concluded by saying that Iran would defend its nuclear rights, and the Islamic Republic would continue its peaceful nuclear program irrespective of the sanctions imposed on it.
Iran officially launched the Bushehr nuclear power plant on Monday, ending the countdown for the inauguration of the first atomic plant in the country.
