Default gil meche leaves 11million on the table to allow kc royals flexability

pretty noble thing to do.he unexpectly retired with another year on his contract.he was owed 11 million & he could have played & collected his check but said he felt he couldnt pitch the way he wanted & he didnt want the royals to waste money on him.he was thankful the team had gave him 5yr 55million contract & collected 44 million of it.he give the team some flexability...the amazing thing is he WAS NOT pushed into retirement by the team.he made an unexpected announcement.he had a spot in the bullpen secured after an injury last year prevented him from starting anymore.he still threw high 90's...you dont see this happen anymore in sports.most guys are greedy & would ride it out no matter how bad they played...

$44 million dollars in 4 years, i'd retire too.

But you know, what you said about most guys being greedy and riding it out even if they aren't good anymore; I kinda disagree, cause sometimes is more of a love for the sport, they just can't let it go. It's hard to leave something you've been doing since 5-8 years old. It really is.

Happens in boxing, football, basketball, etc. It's just hard to let go if you truly love the sport.

i agree with you that many guys hang on too long but many will also ride it out sort of say.i know its the teams fault for signing the big contracts but there are times when a team asks a guy to take a paycut or waive his no trade claus to help the team & they say screw you & become a distraction, again the teams fault for signing them.i just heard this story today watching the yankees\tigers game & the commentators commended him because he made the team but they put him in the bullpen.11million to be a short reliever for 1 more year is a pretty good deal on a crappy team, but he chose to help the team move in another direction by his sudden retirement...classy move
