Mayweather speaks about his legacy as if it’s cemented as one of the greatest of all time. But, when you look below the hot air that he’s blowing, you can see that it’s full of controversies. For a man who brags about his greatness and his money, his career will be defined by his cowardly acts.
In boxing, the greatest cowardly act is one of purposely avoiding or “running scared” from fighting other legitimate fighters in your weight class. Mayweather has made a career out of this. Let’s take a look at a quote from Miguel Cotto on Mayweather:
* “That’s the thing he does for his whole career. He run from the really good boxer kind, he choose the others. I don’t know how the people who know about boxing put him in the first place in the pound for pound champion.”.. BoxingNews.com
A few years ago, Mayweather decides to retire, but it wasn’t because there wasn’t any legit competition; it was because he didn’t want to fight any of them. Instead, he goes off dancing and wrestling. He goes and becomes an “entertainer”.
When Mayweather comes back to boxing, he continues his “hand picking” ways and takes a fight with Marquez who was clearly outweighed and outmatched. After the fight, the boxing fans start speaking out more and demanding the match between Mayweather and Pacquiao. There was no way Mayweather could hide or avoid this fight as he has done in the past. So he acts like he will take the fight.
But, in his cowardly craftiness, Mayweather found a way to get the fight called off. He decides to make ridiculous demands for drug testing that no fighter ever does. When Pacquiao’s camp comes out and denies these absurd demands, Mayweather tries to shift all blame on Pacquiao. He tries to get the public to blame PacMan. But it doesn’t work. In fact, we find out that Mayweather possibly took "illegal" drugs in the past.
Now, Mayweather is looking for a replacement fight. There are legit fighters out there willing to step up and face him on short notice. Instead of saying yes, Mayweather brushes them aside and looks for another winnable “walking punching bag”. Just as a tiger can't change his stripes, Mayweather can't change his cowardly ways.
Even in his personal life, Mayweather tries to cover up that he’s still a scared little boy inside. Last summer, Mayweather was involved in an incident where a gun was pulled out on another man at a skating rink. Who goes to a skating rink with a gun? This guy has mansions, armored trucks, guns, and a ton of money but it still can’t cover up who he really is.
