But the moment if and when MLS really takes off or if the top Americans consistently play for the world's top clubs you will notice the discrepancy between the amount you care and the amount that the players and the clubs of those players care about the International game.
The US was ranked in the top 5 in the world a few years ago. The US has made every WC since 1990. I would say they've had some great success. Beating Italy this year and just coming off a win against Mexico in Mexico is showing the world that the US means business.

Oh god... That was a friendly. A meaningless match.

A win today would mean a lot more than a win over mexico in a friendly.

A win is a win. A friendly still gives ranking points.

Iceland beating Norway today was a massive upset.

            Nobody takes rankings seriously.

But look at what England did to Moldova today.

Not to bad. There's no reason why we cant come out of Kingston with at least a point.

Aren't England 3rd in the rankings?

We finally have a team that nobody believes in and they're ranked the grotesquely high. It is because they always win these friendlies and according to those points a friendly win is worth as much as a tournament win. Nonsense.

US are in the clutch of teams who can potentially get to a quarter-final of a world cup which is were England perennially are. But we used to have delusions of going further which was nice. Nobody has those delusions anymore. Plus Brazil is probably 'too hot' for our players or the hotel will be too far away, or the ground will be too hard. Or John Terry would have nailed 22 of his team-mates wives.

So it really doesn't mean anything if we beat a team of villagers 5-0 in a world cup qualifier. Because when it matters a major nation will dick us.
