There has been some debate on whether or not referee Joe Cortez "verbally instructed" Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz to resume fighting during their controversial fourth round at the MGM Grand last Saturday night. After Ortiz used his head, intentionally, on Mayweather, Cortez took Ortiz to the center of the ring and took away a point. Ortiz, looking to apologize, walked over to give Mayweather a hug, and within a split moment Mayweather would land two punches on a defenseless Ortiz to score a knockout. During video replays, Cortez was shown looking at the timekeeper's table and stating "time in."

If that's Cortez' side he's really out of it...the last 2 things he does, after the fighters are put in a neutral corner is to signal time in and the to the fighters, "box". He totally blew it...great HOF ref...do us a favor Joe, you and Mora retire, you're hurting this great sport...

Wow, I guess it was an illegal shot if he said that.

Yes, you're suppose to protect yourself at all times but if Cortez is saying this that means that they both were still on a break.

In other words, Floyd sucker punched Ortiz and got rewarded with the win.

Ortiz has said that he did not realize the fight was on, so apparently he did not understand this "gesture" that boxers are supposed to know.

He shows again he cannot keep a fight under control anymore when it could have been done by simply directing both fighters to a neutral corner and ordering them to "box". Instead he let two heated fighters stand around while he was calling for the timekeeper with his eyes off the boxers.
