  • Comments Thread For: Abner Mares to Become WBC Mandatory to Ponce De Leon

According to World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman, former two division world champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13KOs) will become the mandatory challenger to WBC featherweight king Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35KOs).

Ponce was scheduled to face mandatory challenger Jayson Velez on March 2, but the Puerto Rican challenger withdrew with an injury and now the WBC is going to replace him, placing Mares in the mandatory position.

Really no need to make him the manatory seeing as how this match was going to be made no matter what. But atlest we know now the WBC would not get in the way and back it.

Really? An 122 lber magically becomes the mandatory overnight? Why not Russell Jr who was supposed to fight the winner of Ponce - Velez... Sigh the WBC. And here I thought they were pushing for the right thing this year.

          bro... Its the wbc...
          Im not surprised a 122 fighter who hasn't fought a 122 opponnent is a 126 mandatory.
Just like when Alexander became the #1 wbc contender the instant he left the 140 weight class.

They did the same thing when Mares moved to 122. No surprise here.

The guy is a star but he hasn't done anything at the weight. I don't mind the title shot but to make him the #1 challenger that way is really new to me.

The WBC is one corrupt organization, they will accomodate everytime when there is big money involved

And some idiots were saying that GBP doesn't match their guys tough. Ponce is a difficult matchup for Mares.
