  • Comments Thread For: Lampley: Showtime’s Worked to Get Floyd for Long Time

Jim Lampley, HBO’s veteran blow-by-blow announcer for its boxing broadcasts, believes that Showtime long worked toward getting Floyd Mayweather to sign with them before ultimately succeeding this month.

Lampley, who made the same observation others in the industry have, said this in a radio interview with The Mighty 1090 in San Diego with Scott and BR, according to a transcript of the conversation from SportsRadioInterviews.com and a recording of the interview posted on that website.

“This is something that CBS/Showtime have been working on for a long, long time and within the past year they have sharpened their knives and worked even harder than ever before to try to get into this arena,” Lampley said.

Known in advance” lol. Must be referring to anyone at 147 and below over the last few years.

We get it, Floyd needs to fight the MW Champion of the World.

I thought the same thing. Which fighter, excluding Martinez, will not be thought of as a win for Floyd from 140-154? That's pretty much the ultimate excuse to give Floyd no credit at all for any win. Just plant that seed there, known in advance, which coincidentally refers to any fighter within 140-154, which Floyd will most likely fight at for the rest of his career.

So basically....the only fight Floyd can take that he won't be thought of as a probable win going is.....the Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, who isn't even fighting the likes of Golovkin, Geale, Pirog, the biggest threats in his own weight class. And won't go any higher in weight to test the waters at a weight he would be under sized at.

What people don't get is this......Floyd has fought at a weight he's under sized by a huge margin at, which is 154 lbs. Sergio has yet to test the waters at a weight he's severely under sized at, which would be 168 lbs. Sergio is a solid Middleweight, in fact Sergio is probably bigger at 160 than Floyd is at 147.

"The likes"? Sorry but Golovkin hasn't fought anyone and Pirog hasnt done **** aside from beating a prospect. Stop trying to protect Floyd. Martinez has fought enough top level guys. Can't believe people are saying GGG beats Martinez lol. Martinez would make Golovkin look silly. Only thing GGG has is a punchers chance just like Chavez. Hell, Chavez is more proven (which is sad) and brings more money than Golovkin.

Golovkin, Pirog, and Geale > Martin f**king Murray

I don't have to protect anyone, that's a dumb thing to say. Floyd doesn't have to fight the Middleweight champion, who isn't fighting his own best fights in his division. I had only a slight problem with Dzinziruk, but at least he was a Top 10 guy at 154. Barker was BULLS**T. He should have Pirog when he fought Barker. I didn't have a problem with Macklin or Chavez. But now in 2013, he's going to fight Martin Murray and a Chavez rematch, instead of Golovkin, Pirog, and Geale???

Stop protecting Martinez....his excuse to not fight Golovkin, given by his promoter, is "Who the f**k is Golovkin, why should we fight him", acting like Sergio is some PPV star or some s**t. But then Sergio fans want Welterweights to fight him, and than say it's ducking when a guy two weight classes below him doesn't fight him.

Get outta here. If Sergio cared about legacy and wanted to really make one like these smaller guys he's called out have done already....he'd either clean out 160 completely by fighting Golovkin, Pirog, Geale, and Quillin....or he'd move up to 168 and fight Ward or Kessler/Froch.

Lampley is part of the problem, and far from the solution. Not only did he unapologetically become a certain fighters personal cheerleader, he even laid in bed with the said fighter trainer by producing a documentary series. There is no credibility coming from him at this point, and now he can say whatever he wants because at the end of the day he'll never get the opportunity to call and subjectively hate on a Floyd Mayweather Jr fight again...

Unless its on that weak ass show he produces, which no one cares about let alone even watches.
