  • Comments Thread For: Thomas Oosthuiezen-Eleider Alvarez on Pascal-Bute

Fresh from a less than stellar performance when he saw off Ezquiel Maderna's challenge to his IBO super middleweight title, talented Thomas “Tommy Gun”Oosthuizen will move up to the light heavyweight to contest for the WBA interim title against Colombian-born Canadian Eleider Alvarez underneath the Jean Pascal-Lucien Bute clash at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on January 18.

Oosthuizen who has cracked the WBA top ten rating without a single fight in the division, is listed 7th in the division and got the rare opportunity after the sixth- rated and WBA Continental champion Najib Mohammedi passed on the chance due to unavailability.

Sounds like a decent fight on paper but what a massive joke the WBA is.

Ranked 7th in their rankings without having a fight in the LHW division.

Tommy fights for the interim title after the WBA upgrades Shumenov to super status. Meanwhile they create another paper title by ordering Oliviera and Braehmer fight for the regular title.

    WBA just tripled their money.

Oosthuizen does need to move to Light Heavy I'll pick him to win this one.

"Ironically Shumenov will also be defending his belt on the same day against Tomas Kovacs at Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas, US."

Nothing ironic about it. Shumenov has not fought a mandatory, or even a warm body, in 3 1/2 years and gets elevated to "super champion" status, which was created by the WBA to keep select, pampered "champions" from ever having to defend against a legitimate opponent/mandatory. It's the only way they can justify him defending against Kovacs, who is not in boxrec's top 100 at 175.

Braehmer, an incredibly well-connected, softly matched veteran, gets handed his second regular "title" in a setup fight against a cupcake at home in Germany.

Oosthuiezen gets to fight for a fake interim "title" against an opponent whose biggest win came against a long shot Edison Miranda

And the WBA laughs all the way to the bank, collecting three "title fight" sanctioning fees in one division

It's not ironic in any way. Another misuse of the word.

                  Try 'coincidental'.

Yup. There is nothing ironic in what the WBA does. Its decision to suck the legitimacy out of the sport with fake titles is as calculated as a mob hit.
