  • Comments Thread For: Juanma Back To Basics For Planned December Return

Former champion Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez (31-2, 28KOs) is going back to his roots and learning new things as he prepares for a potential return in December. Lopez was knocked out in two of his last three fights. As we reported a few weeks ago, Juama added trainer Freddie Trinidad to his corner. Juanma started training with Trinidad at a gym located in Caimito, Puerto Rico. Lopez's corner will still include Orlando Piņero and coach Alex Caraballo.

Trinidad is helping Juanma improve his defense and close a major hole that exposed the Puerto Rican boxer in his recent defeats. The experienced trainer is helping Juanma avoid the "straight right hand" - a punch that gave him problems in both of his knockout defeats to Orlando Salido.

Hope this kid can come back to form. He was exciting to watch and had a great following. Still wouldn't mind seeing him fight Gamboa.

In a way those losses were good for him. Now he knows he just can't walk through the competition. With his punch and better defence, he can still be a serious threat to anyone. If only they could improve his footwork, that would take him to another level. An undefeated record is not that important, especially against hand picked opponents. Learning from the loss or losses is. Salido had 12 losses when he fought Juanma, but he made him pay for every one of them. That's how you deal with loss, make someone else pay.

I like watching JuanMa fight win or lose. The guy just needs to box more and win rounds. His defense needs improvement.

Makes for great fights, even if it's shown he isn't an elite fighter.
