  • Comments Thread For: Nathan Cleverly Eager To Impress American Fans in LA

Nathan Cleverly is relishing the chance to impress American fight fans after his WBO light-heavyweight title defence was switched to Los Angeles on November 10.

Cleverly was originally due to face Ukrainian Vyacheslav Uzelkov in Cardiff on October 27, but Golden Boy promotions have handed him a spot on a bill featuring WBC super-bantamweight champion Abner Mares and IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz.

The Welshman is determined to enhance his reputation in the US and believes such a big stage will bring out the best of him.

I'm in awe Cleverly did not mention Calzaghe at any point in this interview.

Wonder if this means we get a legit challenger for his title, or a unification fight?

            Haha, yeah right...

Coyne is rated 2 with WBA and 10 with WBC so not at all bad for short notice.

Strange though he isn't rated in top 10 with WBO but that's how crazy the ranking system is I suppose.

Can be rated 2 with one sanction body and not in the top 10 in another.

Coyne has fought at Crusier and a quick look at him - he's v strong and can punch.

Cleverly needs to get over to Las Vegas and acclimatise (2/3 wks before) and also get some southpaw sparring.

This guy is live and not to be underestimated. He needs to keep his hands up when in close coz Coyne throws hooks with bad intentions, but if Cleverly has anything about him he'll come through this comfortably overall.

He needs to use his speed advantage and superior boxing ability against this fellow.

To be fair to Cleverly he's stated he's taken a fight in America to get exposure so that Shumenov and Cloud will face him in America, as they aren't prepared to come to the UK for it.

He's just cancelled a defence 10 miles from his house to take this, so to be fair, he deserves credit for pushing himself to get exposure stateside and openly stating he wants a Shumenov or Cloud next in the States.

If he wanted to stay home and fly under the radar with easy defences then he wouldn't have made this move.
